FASHION FIX: Nike goes 'new blue' for spring, leaves winter in the dust

Don't be blue: With another winter slowly creeping towards oblivion (I hope), the coming spring season's best hues are finally making their mark. The ladies were hit with yellow fever in Dubai, and now the blues are hitting hard around the globe.

THE LOW DOWN: Venus + Serena talk politics at Bangalore Open

Speaking up: Andy Roddick isn't the only tennis baller feeling all political these days. The 'Sisters Sledge' - Venus + Serena Williams - threw their racquets in the ring and spoke out on the emergence of minorities, more specifically African-Americans, in tennis and in the US at this week's Bangalore Open where they're playing singles and teaming… Continue

Multitasking!!

I never "blogged" before, but here goes nothing! I am so excited! I went over to the courts last night to hit with a group of friends, and for the first time, I actually was able to put thought into my game....does that make sense? Instead of simply hitting the ball back to the other person, I was able to focus on where I wanted the ball to go. Instead of simply running up or back to meet the ball, I was able to think about my approach and how I wanted to hit the ball! Okay, this may sound… Continue

Spring?

I can't wait until this winter in NYC is over.
I plan to start playing tennis as soon as the temperature is in the 50's.

I hope I can get to play with some of you NY Tennisopolis members this season.

Cheers,

Andy O

One wrong thing messes it all up

Ever felt that there was something missing when you were learning something? You see how it's done, you know you can do it, and yet over and over you just can't and you don't know why. And then something clicks, and all of a sudden, you've got it, no prob.

This happened to me when I was learning the "dinky serve", that fall back serve where you throw up the ball and tap it into the other court. The first time I tried it, I couldn't get it to go consistently into the other… Continue

Felt like forever...

...since I prowled a tennis court, but I finally did tonight. It was dry and not as cold as it has been, so the roommate and I decided to hit some balls around after the Blazer game. We were both pretty rusty, but we drew a crowd of three: a mom, a dad and their toddler. After five rounds of collecting eight balls, and only two decent rallies, we called it quits. I would have really liked to get a set in, but I probably wouldn't have been able to get my serve warmed up. I guess I'd have to saw… Continue

My last game against BM 4-6, 5-7

What I did right :

Relaxed during

my serve

Played my opponent backhand, which was his weak side

Anticipated and moved to the net when i saw my opponant was in trouble

Returned down the line on the even side

Moving to the net: Move in

straight line (no zig zag)

"Split" when my opponent was about to hit the ball.

What I did not do right:

i tried to play it safe

first when i had a huge lead (5-2), than when i felt… Continue

The Future of Tennisopolis

There's no limit.

tennisopolis future

As most of you know, my goal is to connect tennis players and tennis fans with one another. As the site gets bigger, the matchups get better. We have almost 30 people in our big metropolitan groups. I foresee a day when instead of an "Austin Tennis Group", we'll have a "North Austin 4.5 Tennis" group and that's a very good thing. I foresee pages for your tennis club too. I belong to a tennis club and setting up matches is a…

Hawk-Eye Technology: Big Brother is Watching

“If anyone's been listening to my commentary the past year then they know I'm in favor of using replay. I think it will make tennis more interesting.” -John McEnroe

I'm intrigued by the Hawk-Eye technology so I decided to do some research. Looks like in regard to the question I had about the point being replayed in the Ivanovic - Hantuchova match, it seems that instead of the point being replayed, Hantuchova probably won that point and advanced to 30 from 15, otherwise the game would… Continue

Player Challenge an Unfair Advantage?

Tsonga may be the name on everyone's lips today after the 20-year-old

Frenchman pulled off a stunning upset over Nadal, but what I'm

concerned about from the latest round of the Australian Open is this

little thing called the Player Challenge.

I was watching the remarkable rally of Ivanovic vs. Hantuchova when in

the third set Ivanovic stopped play to request a player challenge

against a baseline hit by Hantuchova. The game was at 30-40, with

Ivanovic… Continue

My Racquet Journey

I started playing tennis in 1970 with a no name brand aluminum racquet. The metal racquet back then were very poor quality. You could bend then with your bare hands, I'm surprised you could hit tennis balls with them. I went through about 3 of these aluminum racquets until my Junior year in High School. It was then that I got my first real tennis racquet, a Spalding Smasher aluminum racquet. My Senior year I got another racquet, a Head Master with the blue… Continue

Hitting on the Rise

Andre Agassi popularized a new and aggressive way to play tennis. He would stand close to the baseline and hit most balls as they rose from the bounce. We now call this “hitting on the rise”. The traditional method to hit groundstrokes was to let the ball bounce, reach it’s peak then strike the ball as it descended towards the ground. But Agassi’s incredible timing allowed…

Drop Shots

To hit a good drop shot one needs a good slice or underspin shot. A drop shot is really nothing more than an underspin shot that lands short or close to the net.

The continental grip is the best for both the forehand and backhand drop shots because it naturally tilts the strings open to lift the ball up. This allows the player to put…
