LIVE - Dinara Safina vs Kristina Barrois

World number one Dinara Safina manages to win again 'somehow' defeating the charismatic Kristina Barrois in three sets as she rallied from behind to win after over 2 hours and 12 minutes of intense battle. Safina won 6-7 6-2 6-3.

The match reminded of Safina's first round match against Rogowska where she had lost the first set too, but rallied to win.

Defending champions cruise into third round in New York

Top seed and five time defending champion Roger Federer reached the third round of the 2009 US Open with a straight set, yet hard-fought win over German Simon Greul.

"I just had to make him play more shots, be more tough," told Federer. "I had to raise my level today to win because that's what was required to get through."

Earlier in… Continue

What's with all these women coming back?

First it was Kim Clijsters. Then I heard talk about Mary Pierce who is reportedly in serious training with Yutaka Nakamura at Bollettieri’s. And now rumor is that Henin is training for some exhibition matches later this year and may be open to returning to competing for real. What’s going on? What’s with all this leaving and coming back?

Personally I blame Dinara. Yes I know that it’s not fair of me to lay blame anywhere but since you logged on to this blog to get my opinion I will… Continue

" I HATE My Tennis Partner!"

First off, I don't HATE any of my partners. There are many, many of them and they are all lovely people with whom I enjoy playing tennis. I wouldn't play if I wasn't having fun, right?

And you probably don't hate your tennis partner either. But, sometimes, on occasion, maybe every once in awhile, you end up with a partner you're not completely compatible with. I call this the "mismatched partner."

Maybe your mismatched partner is… Continue

US Open Men;s Preview - History in the making

The men's tennis is no more about the Nadals and Federers of the game as the third and the most exciting angle comes in the form of Scot Andy Murray, and with the challenger brigade all set to overthrow the so-called dictators, we analyse the real-time chances of these gladiators at this year's Open.

US Open Preview - No All-Williams final in New York

Ever since their breakthrough runs in New York in the late nineties, Venus and Serena Williams have dominated the circuit for more than a decade. However and interesting draw allows only one of the Williams to reach the final this year.

Allegations of her not giving her 100% at the non-grand slam events have also fumed a controversy regarding her capabilities and actual deliverance.…

Book Review: "Strokes of Genius"

“Strokes of Genius” opens with a reference to pigeon shit. Apparently pigeons used to shit all over Centre Court at Wimbledon. So in 2008, the All England Club enlisted the services of a hawk to slaughter the pigeons and thereby get rid of the pooping problem. Wertheim introduces this as an analogy to the match between Rafa and Rogi. I assumed that Rafa was the hawk and Rogi the shitting pigeon. I took immediate offense.

Playing with men

I showed up an hour early. In my excitement about playing tennis, I misread the announcement and thought that we were meeting at 6pm. In fact, the meet-up was posted for 7pm. The sun was still brutally hot. The public courts were filling up fast. I stood there for a while wondering where everyone was.

Most of the courts were occupied by men. There was a smattering of women. A woman and a young girl who seemed to be her daughter struggled to hit the ball, the mother’s returns going… Continue

Nadal's Year and Future Riding on U.S. Open

No one will deny that Rafael Nadal has had a difficult year thus far.

He won the Australian Open at the start of the season, continuing a magical run through the 2008 season, however that seems like a decade ago now (doesn't it?). Beyond the Australian Open and leading up to the French, Nadal was simply being "Nadal".… Continue

Tennis Lessons in the DC Metro Area

I recently stumbled across www.playyourcourt.com when searching for tennis lessons in the metro area. For less than I used to pay at my club the company sent a pro to my neighborhood court for a lesson. The lesson went well and I would definitely recommend it.

Courtside coaching, or an exercise in public humiliation?

...I found myself derailed by the bizarre view of courtside coaching in which the coach is attached to a microphone so that the TV audience can hear his every word. And what I saw in Maria Sharapova was a player who seemed utterly humiliated by the experience.

The humiliation started yesterday in the match against Kleybanova. The coach mentioned to Maria that he knew that her arm was tired but that he wanted to hit more slice serves down the line. She interrupted him snappily to… Continue

What is that on Nadal's stomach?

I watched Nadal play the semifinal Cincinnati match tonight against Djokovic and he was wearing a skin-colored, wide strip of tape over his stomach. You could see the tape when his shirt flipped up. None of the ESPN commentators knew what it was or knew of any stomach injuries he had. Does anybody know what this is about?

Paradorn Srichaphan: How's the Wrist?

The former top 10 player, Paradorn Srichaphan is apparently still looking to return to tennis after leaving tennis more than 2 years ago due to a wrist injury.

Wildly popular in Asia, the Thai player was a promising player with character and game. A serious wrist injury however stalled Paradorn's career in 2007 and he hasn't played a tournament since.

Most have written him off after he married a former Miss Universe, headed into… Continue

Is Sampras the Brett Favre of tennis?

When Pete Sampras retired in 2002, after spanking Agassi for the umpteenth time, he gave the impression that he was done with tennis. In interviews he indicated that his career was over. He was going to turn into a homebody, taking care of his wife and helping her to pop out some kids. As evidence that he was done for good, his training team packed up and found other jobs, most famously Paul Annacone who found a lead job with the Lawn Tennis Association.

I can’t honestly say that I… Continue
