Just Thinking ...

There's been a ton of tournament action going on and all of it has gotten my old mind mind churning. Here's some of what's been running through my head about this old sport of ours called tennis:

• Marat Safin actually rallied to win a match for the first time in what seems forever over in the L.A. tournament! It's so crazy to think that if he wanted to, he could easily be a top 10 player instead of retiring.

• I know he's just a kid and has plenty of years ahead of him,… Continue

A Caribbean girl/French woman retires

...Dechy was not the most tremendous achiever in tennis. I say this against the backdrop of comparisons to such high achievers as the Williams sisters and Steffi Graf. Some players, like Graf, seem to wait until their tennis life is over before than can go on to other pursuits. Players like Dechy combined tennis with other pleasures. If I had to choose, I could not imagine having Graf’s single-mindedness, even though I truly admire it. I am more like Dechy. I like to enjoy a nice glass of wine… Continue

Looking for hitting partner...

Hi, I am a 29 yo male looking for a hitting partner, I am a beginner and I want to practice. I am able to practice on wed and sat during the day time and after work on the other days. Let me know if we can get together to play. I usually go to the courts in Erringer and Royal in Simi Valley.

Looking for some fun competition

I'm a rusty 4.5 (a 5.0 when in shape) and would like to find someone around that same level with whom to hit. I would be willing to play anywhere in south Austin and would be available regularly. Shoot me an email if you're interested.

Contemplating the nature of Roddick’s injury

...With the announcement that Roddick has also withdrawn from Indianapolis, I find myself contemplating the impact of his injury from a broader scope. Clearly the US would not have lost to Croatia had Roddick played Davis Cup. Clearly Dmitry Tursunov and Dudi Sela would not be the top seeds in Indianapolis had Roddick not called in sick. An injured Roddick is not good for American tennis.

That this coincides with an injured Nadal and an absent Federer places men’s tennis in a curious… Continue

What exactly is the relevance of the ESPYs?

It’s not entirely Jamie Foxx’ fault but his presence a few years ago didn’t help. It wasn’t that he serenaded Serena. It was that he didn’t seem to know how to stop serenading her. His song seemed to go on and on, and then he draped his body over hers and expressed his lust in a manner that I personally would have found disrespectful.

To be fair, it did not seem to bother Serena who laughed along gamely and spanked his butt when asked to do so. But I did note that she did not use the… Continue

Summer '09

I met a new tennis partner last weekend, one who will challenge my game at the same time keep me fine tuned. While Jason and Guy play each other in the eastern time zone, I tirelessly work to hone my skills for the eventual meeting in which I will inevitably bash both of their brains in. They have no idea what lies in store for them. As for basketball, the great foot injury of '08 is a long distant memory, but has taught many valuable lessons of humility, courage, and… Continue

letter to rafa

(Rafael Nadal is returning to the tour at the Rogers Cup in Montreal in a few weeks. Not that he needs it, but I thought a letter of encouragement from yours truly would be a nice gesture to tennis' ultimate warrior.)

Dear Rafa,

You don't know me.

I'm not mental or anything so don't freak out.

We have nothing in common except we both play tennis - you slightly better than me - and that we have both been MIA as of late. As a matter of fact, one of my… Continue

So Hingis should have used the Katy Perry defense?

I have in the space of this blog, previously bitch-slapped Martina Hingis for having tested positive for cocaine. I have also been less harsh on Gasquet for the same offense, not because I have double standards -- although I will fully accept if some readers believe that I do -- but because I honestly felt that there were differences between their situations that made the one less excusable than the other.

A friend called me after I posted that last column to say that he thought that… Continue

Gasquet's Coke Problem Due to French Kissing!

In yet another ''only in Miami'' story, French tennis player Richard Gasquet had his two-year drug ban lifted Wednesday after only two months because an international tribunal ruled that he had inadvertently ingested cocaine while kissing a woman he didn't know at South Beach nightclub SET during the Sony Ericsson Open in late March.

Gasquet, ranked No. 23, had withdrawn from the tournament with a shoulder injury on March 28, partied at… Continue

How Exactly Did Fed Beat A-Rod AGAIN?

Even though the amazing 2009 Wimbledon final is behind us, I still find myself thinking what could've been for Roddick. He's never been this close to winning W or to beating Roger in an important match. Oh so close but this ain't horseshoes. Andy had to settle for the big dish again (second place) and it was tough to watch.

Why? Why did Andy come so close? And why did he still fall short? Will Hamilton breaks it down in the following video. Check it out. Post comments here at… Continue

Selesians must be having a field day

...Right about now, Selesians must be celebrating like it’s Christmas. You see, yesterday, Monica Seles got inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. This honor is very much deserved. Seles has won 53 singles titles and six doubles titles. She held the # 1 ranking for a total of 178 weeks and in both 1991 and 1992, she was the # 1 player in the world. She has won nine Grand Slams (only Wimbledon eluded her). And she was the original screamer. You could hear her playing a mile away.… Continue
