letter to rafa

(Rafael Nadal is returning to the tour at the Rogers Cup in Montreal in a few weeks. Not that he needs it, but I thought a letter of encouragement from yours truly would be a nice gesture to tennis' ultimate warrior.)

Dear Rafa,

You don't know me.

I'm not mental or anything so don't freak out.

We have nothing in common except we both play tennis - you slightly better than me - and that we have both been MIA as of late. As a matter of fact, one of my clients - I'm just some obscure coach in Singapore - was surprised to see me turn up to his lesson the other day.

"Dude, I thought you were dead," he said.

"Come again," I might have said.

"Yeah man. You haven't written anything in over a week so I figured someone wrapped you in a rug and dumped you in the Singapore straits."

So Rafa, I'm pleased to report that I am not swimming with the fishes in the straits and am indeed very much alive and kicking. I will even be making a little sojourn to Cambodia so you and the rest of the people who read me - I know this is what you have been doing in your time off - will have to live without my witty repartie for at least a week starting on Sunday.

I'm sure you'll manage.

What I have been doing is playing a lot. Well a lot by my standards. Last week I played in the Singapore Open and ended up making the final. It's not quite Wimbledon but ahh ...
