RICHARD GASQUET SUSPENDED FOR COCAINE, SAFIN BLAMES PARTY FOUL

The AP reported today that Richard Gasquet has been officially suspended from competition after testing positive for cocaine in Miami. He will be off the tour at least until the ITF holds an anti-doping tribunal on the matter, which could take up to 60 days to arrange. This means Richard Gasquet will definitely miss Roland Garros. He could face a two-year ban if found guilty.

Gilbert Ysern, director general of the French Federation had this… Continue

MARIA SHARAPOVA IS COMING BACK IN WARSAW

Maria Sharapova is finally ready to return to competition, and she’s positively GUSHING with excitement (as are we, right?) Here’s the latest from her website:

“I am very happy to report that I will make my singles return to the tour in Warsaw, Poland, the week of May 18. Although it has not been an easy process these last few months, I really believe it’s made me a much stronger person in so many areas of my life professionally and… Continue

ROGER FEDERER IN MADRID: PLAYING MIND GAMES WITH RAFAEL NADAL

Roger Federer spoke to the press in Madrid on Sunday and was brimming with optimism about his chances at the Madrid Open and for the rest of the season. Roger said that he knows he can beat Nadal on clay, despite the head-to-head, and that his main goals for the year are winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He also mentioned that he isn’t actively searching for a new coach, but is always “open” for solid advice on ways to improve his… Continue

RAFAEL NADAL: MADRID, WE HAVE A PROBLEM

Rafael Nadal may be Spanish and the King of Clay, but he is none too happy about this week’s clay court Masters event in Madrid. The Age recently provided the full laundry list of Nadal’s complaints (click here for the original article):

- On the altitude: “(It’s) a serious problem so close to Paris. It would be better if Rome were the last event before Paris since the altitudes are similar.”

- On the hype of Madrid becoming… Continue

THE MYSTERIOUS NADAL VS. THE APPROACHABLE FEDERER

There is a terrific article by Danielle Rossingh and Alex Duff in yesterday’s Bloomberg.com entitled: “Federer Fails to Deter Nadal in Fight to be Richest Tennis Star.” It’s about the two players’ earning powers and Nadal’s ever-increasing marketability. It’s chock full of fascinating details about the Nadal family’s business and personal dealings. (Click here to read the whole thing - you won’t be disappointed!)

Here are just some of the… Continue

Last League Match Tomorrow

Well folks, tomorrow is my last league match, and I am definitely out of shape. I missed the last two matches, one planned for my honeymoon (which was amazing!) and one because I caught a stomach flu. When my hubby and I returned this weekend, we played twice, once with the ball machine, and once just with each other. After two weeks of no play, I was sorely off my game, and I still haven't practiced serving. So tomorrow will definitely be a challenge. So for anyone who has been following my… Continue

Tennis on Twitter

Do you Twitter?

Twitter is the social network which asks its members to answer the famous question “What are you doing?” in 140 characters or less. It's like Facebook, minus the photo albums, applications, groups, pages, etc. It's a very simple way to connect with friends, make new ones, or just follow your favorite celebs / athletes.

Here are some of the interesting tennis Twitter members I follow:

Tennis League Season 2, Match 4

My match this past Tuesday evening gave me a little insight into how Federer must have felt playing Djokovic in Miami. Blustery conditions do not make for good tennis, and my opponent definitely had better control of the ball in the wind than I did. I don't think I've double faulted as many times in a league match, even in my first season, and my backhand went long 9 out of 10 times. The final score was 1-6, 3-6.

The best part of the match was the entertainment value when the tennis… Continue

Roger Federer marries longtime girlfriend

World number two Roger Federer sent out a short yet meaningful message to his fans during the weekend, announcing that he married his longtime girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec in an intimate ceremony at his hometown of Basel in Switzerland. The couple announced last month that they are expecting their first child.

Here’s his message posted on his website:

Dear Fans

Tennis League Season 2, Match 2

This season is definitely starting off on a roll. Last night, I won my second match at 6-2, 6-0. I still missed a lot more than I should have with unforced errors, but I got it under control a lot sooner this time than last. And only two double faults, which is a miracle in itself, considering I just changed my grip on my serve this past weekend. Now I'm serving with the appropriate grip, doing a bit more pronation, and hitting the ball above my head instead of low and out in front of me. All… Continue

Tennis League Season 2, Match 1

Last night was the first match of my second league. I came off to a great start, winning 6-4, 6-0.

The simplest analysis of the match was that in the first set, unforced errors were killing me - especially on the shots that I had the most time to prepare for. It's like the longer I think about it, the better the chance I'm going to overkill it, or plot it right into the net. During the second set, I toned it down more, and my shots became more planned and consistent, which made a big… Continue
