The Advanced Forehand: Is your forehand more of a "driver" or more of a "hook" shot?

I was out practicing with a friend who plays 4.5 and open tournaments and leagues. I hadn't seen him in 8 months, and he had told me he had changed his forehand drastically. Originally, he had a Berasetegui type Extreme Western forehand grip, which would produced gobs of spin, but would not drive through the court much. He would wail upwards on the ball and…

Why is Sara Errani So Tough to Beat?

Former champions don’t always make good prognosticators, as Steffi Graf, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova proved when they predicted Serena Williams would win the French Open. The legendary trio was no doubt surprised, perhaps even embarrassed, when 13-time Grand Slam champ…

How to become a great server

This is a follow up, to my post on how to become a great returner. Most recreational players are enamored with the speed of fast serves. And I'll agree, it's fun to swing away on the first serve. But in terms of importance, it's consistency, placement and then power. Keep it in this order. Because you can't have a good serve without consistency.

I equate consistency with topspin. When you hit with topspin you are adding safety to your shot. With this in mind, it makes sense…

Chela’s Top-10 Ways You Know You’re a WTA Tour Player

Tennis Radio, a New Frontier

Peter Freeman and I just co-hosted a new radio show called Tennis Mind that is the brainchild of Jason Lampione.  I'm sure all the hard core Tennisopolites are familiar with Peter and Jason from the site.  Here is the unedited version of our maiden voyage.  We need to iron out a few technical kinks, but all in all, it turned out to be a really fun show.  Our major guests were former professional tennis player Jeff…

The Road to College Tennis: Mbonisi Ndimande

It is great to have larger than life idols to inspire you. But at times we overlook legitimate sources of inspiration as it comes from relatable people, our brothers and sisters. It is always motivating to see great results come from a structure and system whose blue print you are a result of as well. Such is the case with this young man. His story sums up the path to college tennis and pro tennis for most tennis players from Zimbabwe and Africa, except in Mbonisi’s case, he did it…

Toast to a Tennis Player on Titanic

Imagine one of the world’s best tennis players getting caught in one of history’s great disasters. Think it would be big news?

The Titanic departed Southampton on April 10, 1912, with Richard WIlliams and his father, Charles, on board. (F.G.O. Stuart)
