Players and Coaches: There are two games going on out there...

One is - what 99% of the people that hold a racket play. That one is to try and hit the ball over the net. The other is what most pros and some college players are capable of, and that is utilizing the entire body and playing an effortless, precise, powerful and "natural" looking game. It's time for all of us to elevate our teaching and playing and get more players in that second category. Everyone can play the game utilizing their entire body to stroke the ball - on all strokes! Help…

Tennis-Think of Your "Butt"

This article will not be too wordy but will have a lot of pictures.

When discussing the proper way to hit strokes many things are covered, however not too often where the correct alignment of the butt of the racquet should be. In many cases if the butt is correct the rest may follow suit. So, let’s begin with the backside- the butt.

When hitting the traditional, closed stance forehand in either the eastern or continental grip, the butt should be facing your back…

Tennis Parents Beware

Tennis-Parents Beware

When I was teaching in a club atmosphere I controlled the development of my students on a weekly basis, now teaching at a resort I don’t have that luxury, but the weather is great. Most of our patrons are here for long periods of time or back two to three times a year, so I do have input.

My concern is primarily with the juniors. I can’t tell you how many kids I work with have a solid baseline game but no clue how to hit a formidable serve, not to mention…

The REAL reasons the service toss goes all over the place. Or the most detailed explanation you may read in awhile. lol

Well, I am going to explain the forces which may cause for an errant toss. 1) shoulder rotation 2) balance and 3) alignment. Here I am going to call #1 the "merry go round" and #2 the "seesaw". And #3, the 2 to 7 LINE.

Here goes #1: This is what I call the "merry go round effect". You're supposed to be nice and…

Tennis Serve Record: Sam Groth Hits A Serve 163 MPH!

Sam Groth made history by hitting the fastest tennis serve ever recorded.  This guy is an absolute beast and I look for great things from him in the future on the tennis court.

Tennis-Outside the Box

If you are a fellow USPTA member, you already know this, but if you are an instructor, a parent keeping an eye on your child’s improvement or a player with a consistent stroke problem, it may be time to think outside the box. Tennis can be enjoyed being played in different ways, there is more than one way to correctly play tennis. Here are two examples of what I mean; the first is a tactical issue and the second mechanical.

When I was in New England I taught a junior player…

How to become a great server

This is a follow up, to my post on how to become a great returner. Most recreational players are enamored with the speed of fast serves. And I'll agree, it's fun to swing away on the first serve. But in terms of importance, it's consistency, placement and then power. Keep it in this order. Because you can't have a good serve without consistency.

I equate consistency with topspin. When you hit with topspin you are adding safety to your shot. With this in mind, it makes sense…

Roddick vs Nadal the transformation

I found something interesting at tenniswarehouse.com.  A thread on the Roddick vs Nadal 2004 US Open match. I was delighted to find a link to the highlights, because I've never seen the match before.

This was the first meeting between them. At the time Roddick was playing some of his best tennis and Nadal was years away from his prime, especially on the faster courts. Roddick destroys Nadal, then goes on to reach the quarter-finals where he lost an epic 5 set match to Joachim…

Chela’s Top-10 Ways You Know You’re a WTA Tour Player

Seems some tennis players were pretty bored today.

And so the rather clever Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina decided to break up the tedium with a series of Tweets that are sort of his version of a Letterman Top-10 list.
