Man, that island is super beautiful! I'd love to play there, but really, how much will it be to make the trip?
Wow, that looks really cool at first glance. It is a huge undertaking apparently. I wonder if they are going to get the turnout they deserve. The concept and website are quite complicated. It is difficult to understand it all; How many teams are going to the island? Looks like the 8 markets feed into a final in CO, then the winners get to go to the island - but how many winners are there? Sounds like the island will have many teams. I wonder how all this gets sorted out in relation to the handicapping system they are using.
There are 8 total amateur spots on the island with each amateur being paired with a pro. Each amateur may bring 1 guest who can just enjoy the island or split the tennis with their partner. The cost for a (2) person spot into the Necker Cup is $95,000 but the winning doubles team of the Life Time Necker Cup Challenge gets to go for free. The winner of each market will go to Colorado Springs, CO for the 8 team final. The winner of this 8 team playoff will then go to Necker Island to compete in the Necker Cup. There will be more prizes announced shortly as well for regional winners etc.
The handicap system is explained on the site but it is rather simple as teams are rated either Pro,A,B,C or D and each level starts with a different score. For example a B team serving against a A team then the score would 15-love to start each game. The A team would also only receive 1 serve. NTRP ratings are used to determine where a team is rated.
Another event that is listed on the site is the Rosewood Little Dix Bay Legends Tennis Camp. This is held during the exact same dates as the Necker Cup ( Dec.9-13). These packages are all-inclusive with meals, alcohol, plus tennis with Luke and Murphy Jensen each morning and afternoon. On the final evening ( Wed. Dec 12) all of the pros ( Currently Bob Bryan, Mike Bryan, Mark Phillipousis and several more being announced soon) will come to Little Dix Bay for a exhibition plus what is being called the "End of the Word Party." At this party, guests will mingle with Sir Richard Branson, the Necker Cup guests and all of the pros. These (2) person packages begin at $8,700.
Necker Island and Little Dix Bay are both incredible places and its hard to believe that a doubles team can win a amateur doubles tournament and actually get to go to one of the most exclusive locations in the world with Richard Branson! It truly is the most prestigious amateur tennis event in the world! I can't wait to see how nervous the players will get when they compete in the finals!
Wow, if any way possible, could you record some of these matches and post it here on Tennisopolis? I definitely can't afford either event, but it would be fun to see tennis in such scenic places. Does Richard Branson play?
Hi Trevor! Glad to see that the Necker Cup is putting advertising banners here in the right column of Tennisopolis! Please keep us posted on the progress. Hey guys, are any of you planning on playing in the local tournaments?
this is cool i want to go!
This would be quite the experience- lets hope someone from tennisopolis gets on there so they can share their experience!
