Tsonga says chair umpire Steiner favored Nadal
n the aftermath of his 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 loss to Rafael Nadal in the Sony Ericsson Open quarterfinals last night, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga alleged that chair umpire Damian Steiner was giving preferential treatment to the world No. 2.
"I was complaining because all the match; I’ve got to," Tsonga told reporters. "I have to challenge, and I was right many, many times. He never take initiative when it's against Rafa. It's all the time like this. So I have to be really focused on the ball, because if the ball is out, if it's really close, he would never say out against Rafa. Always to say against me. If Rafa don't like him anymore, I mean, he would not be in the chair many times on final and semifinal. So sometimes it's not fair. Because I have to take decision, all the time. And he never take decision. He just say the score. That's why sometimes I'm upset about it."
Tsonga added that he felt it’s like double work on the court because he had to watch the ball, the lines and also play the shots. The world No. 6 also complained that he was not scheduled on center court until his match against Nadal.
"It come in your head and you focus on it and you don't have to," Tsonga said. "Then, I lose my concentration, sometimes because of that. He played like three times on the court. I didn't play on the court. I mean, it's like this."
Tsonga, Nadal and some other players have argued that since the advent of Hawk-Eye, too many chair umpires have become too passive.
"I understand sometimes the frustration on this situations," Nadal said. "Because that is true that the referees with the Hawk-Eye are doing less overrules than before. I said hundreds of times, too. But is not because he's playing against me. Happen to me a lot of times, no? Easy to remember. In Australia, you remember against [Tomas] Berdych the very important points 6-all in the tiebreak of the first set? So he didn't make overrule, too, and ball was clear out. So I called the challenge late and the point was for Berdych. So is not a thing with me. Is a general thing with the referees today that with the Hawk-Eye. I believe that they feel that they have less pressure than before. So probably knowing that you have the challenge, they don't take the risk to have to overrule. Tsonga is right in one thing; he's wrong in another thing."

Tsonga I feel you I cant Do the Job of the Ref & the Player. And is also unfair if a Player gets to play on one court all day long every time. imagine that you are in a semi finals but the ref says listen due to scheduleing orwheat ever we have to move you match 2 hour drive away but its only a 10 min drive for your opponent and its your opponents home court....would you play or is that unfair........tsonga is only a man not a goat so its a bit unfair.

I just wish the umps would start enforcing the 30 second rule - and start with Rafa to make a point. They should enforce it across the board on the men's and women's side. It would speed up the game and also really test to see who is fittest.

Shot clock for tennis serve. Interesting to see what Rafa would do when he hears the loud buzzer. Slump his shoulders and scowl, then start all over again.

I think im sounding more & more like nadal....im #1.............i want this i want that.....so i took my info down... its like now im whinning because im on top, TSONGA is in a lose lose....he needs better coaching and off court management!
this is the reason why and it has to do with my posts.....
I laugh at my self ( and everyone here does too err laughs at me ) but IM not making a living by someone else calling my shots in or out... & i dont make a living example iF I have to pay my students when they hit a good shot against me......im making a living by coaching players and hitting.....
so tsonga off court can control everything and his coach should be helping him manage unexpected things like a player been given certain advantages so they will not be easy to beat....( like nadal is ever easy to beat )so the big mental aspect of playing big matches...
BUt Tsonga going out there with out bringing up his feelings...the coach has not addressed these small mental issues and tsonga brings it upon himself to think this is whats going to happen or puts in a mental block about the ref, the court, the player, and could not concentrate... and I heard he played like a beginner against nadal 2000 errors
on nadals side the only thing hes thinking about is forehand backhand serve volley & i have 3 challenges if i get a bad line call.
So as the #1 of a tournament IM happy as long as i get what i want!
which is to play by the EFFEN Rules...( aka no footfaults ).. I want ample rest between matches, some free crap....and to have an easy draw.
Now i lost in the finals of the last tournament because like tsonga I was trying to control aspects of the match that I had not control over & play the match.... I mean no one beast me 6 love and yet do to concentration of me arguing with the ref about foot faults and playing tennis by the rules, trying to watch my opponents feet and call foot faults myself ( which i did 2 or 3 times ) But the fact of watching his feet took all my energy of concentrating on the match its self so I just made the same mistake as tsonga....just play tennis and stop crying ( spoken like a true #1 )
But i believe Tsonga is right....but also need more help..

I couldn't imagine having to watch and call someone's footfaults when you gotta judge their serve for placement at the same time. That is why tennis is a flawed sport. Never happens in racquetball.
