Tennisopolis : Tennis Social Network

Really looking forward to the AO, like usual tennis goes missing for two weeks over Xmas and new year and we all lose the plot and dribble with excitement and anticipation of the first grand slam of the year.

Is this gonna be any different than usual, is anyone going to break the stranglehold that these top four players have in the big events?

Who are the contenders? These are my few.....

Tsonga: big chance this year, loads of confidence coming into the tourney.

Roanic: watching him in Chennai, he is just so explosive. Big game against Tipsy today, if he wins and takes that confidence into the AO, no-one will want to see him in their side of the draw.

Berdych: playing well in the Hopman cup demolishing Guasquet, I like him here, should go far.

Isner: Has the game here but has he got the brain, looking for big things from him this year.

Del Potro: hopefully back fit after and back on form, if he is then he is a time bomb ticking for one of the four fairly early in the tourney with his ranking.

I dont see anyone else, of course there will be upsets but I believe only these 5 players can break the stranglehold of the top four guys. With they tho, probably not!

I think you got it about right.  :-)

I don't think much of Berdych these days; he's the only guy on your darkhorse list that I would leave off.

There may be other guys that could surprise a top 4, like Monfils just did to Nadal in Qatar.     We were talking about Dolgopolov who I think could cause an upset, but for someone else to win (other than the top 4), they will most likely have to create TWO upsets.  I don't see Dolgo doing that.

Berdych playing tsonga in the world finals imo both raised their level to a place where they can contend. They will need to maintain that form and improve further to break thro the 4.

Monfils is an amazing talent but would he have beat nadal if it was important. No.

Dolgo will be interesting to see this year if he can break the top 10.

Just watched raonic beat tipsarevic not playing at his best, that's two top ten players in two days. Great win for him.

Well, I think Nadal and Federer are not going to do well in AO. That is my hunch. People are gonna say what happened to the former #1 and #2. I didn't see Nadal dominate against Monfils. Will he get the edge he needs to be on top again? Hard for me to see it right now.

I do see Tsonga and even Monfils shaking the pot, along with Raonic. There's alot of guys who can unfold the Top 4 dominance. Murray and Djoko are currently playing well, so I look at those Top 2 to do well. I just don't see how Nadal and Fed are going to wake up in a week and start cruising and bruising.

Not so far!  Actually there have been very few upsets in this AO.

I will say that I do not think all 4 top seeds will make the semi's.

Agree or disagree?

Djokovic v ferrer/guasquet.....yes
Murray v tsonga......yes
Nadal v berdych....yes
Fed v delpo....yes

Disagree lol

In your opinion which of these 4 matches will be the closest?

Murray is 5-1 v Tsonga.  The one loss was in 2008.  Most sets not even close.

Fed is 7-2 v del Potro, but we all remember the USO final.  For the long arc, DP is on the way up, Fed is on the way down.  However, I don't think DP is all the way back yet, so I nod Fed too.

Rafa is up 10-3 v Berdych, and usually straight sets.  Berd has not won in this matchup since 2006.

Djokovic is just unstoppable.

So, in conclusion, I disagree with myself too.

Who would've thought Hewitt would beat Raonic? Any of us?

So true.  And Nishikori over Tsonga?  No way.  So, can Kei hang with Murray?  Even if he was fresh, I'd doubt it, but he will be exhausted and dismantled.

All those long sets already for Nishikori. Homie needs a bigger serve.

I have Nadal losing to Berdych... no. Nadal is going home.

Fed has to be careful with Del Potro. We all know he can lose to him. Murray has to be ready for Tsonga's firepower. Will Ivan get him ready? We'll see.

Nadal is not going to lose to Berdych.  The only real threat I see is Delpo playing Fed.  He has beaten him before.  That being said, Fed is playing amazing.  I was surprised Hewitt took a set of Djoko, did he just give everyone some fodder in how to play him?  What is Djoko's record against Ferrer?  Might be a good match.  Murray will kill Kei.  Kei has played too much and didn't fare to well against him the last time they played.

We shall see in the wee early morning hours U.S. time what goes Down Under. lol  If Nadal is not serving well, Birdman has a chance there.

Murray is gonna take Nishikori on a running spree.
