From the no-chance-in-hell files, Masha wants to change her name to Sugarpova during the Open to promote her candy brand.  The USTA is considering the request.  Apparently she has filed some name change docs in Florida where she lives.

What do you think about this?

Maria Sharapova has mercifully decided not to change her name to Maria "Sugarpova" for the two weeks of the US Open in a blatant attempt to promote her line of candy.

So, clearly someone with some perspective advised her to back off this idea.  But the way her agent sells it, it sounds like she decided not to because of logistics!

Her agent, Max Eisenbud, told ESPN:  "Maria has pushed her team to do fun, out-of-the-box-type things to get the word out about Sugarpova," Eisenbud said. "In Miami, we're going to fill a glass truck full of candy and drive it around town. This was an idea that fell along those lines. But, at the end of the day, we would have to change all her identification, she has to travel to Japan and China right after the tournament and it was going to be very difficult."

The marketing manager in me says "great idea", the consumer in me says "really ... ?" the tennis fan says "What? I can't hear you over the shrieking."

Oh, you are in marketing?  What do you think about what just happened?  Is it perfect for her?  A buzz that she was GOING to change her name, but then decided not to.  Still gets all the press without the embarrassment.  And I bet that the TV announcers will mention it at least a couple of times when she is playing.

So, you think it is possible that this whole thing played out as planned?

If Maria spent more time listening and sticking by Jimmy, she'd help her tennis a heck of a lot more than spending time on this goofy idea. My two cents.

Again the me show. sick of this ...

if she was to change her name to shriek-apova it would get more press, & if she won the usopen with out a sound that would make world news. and be impressive.
