I was the auction winner of Myiesha Simmons' Speed Trac X radar unit and I couldn't wait to see what kind of speed I was serving at. Boy, was I surprised....

I figured my flat serve was about 100. Not even close!.....88 mph. Slice into the deuce court: 76 mph. And lastly, the 'kick' serve I've been trying to learn: 48-56 mph.

Brings a whole new level of appreciation to the pros that are serving at 130 on a regular basis.

So true. I play competitively at 4.5 ntrp and I have a pretty big first serve. I'm 6'2" 180 pounds. At the BNP Paribas Open, the highest speed I recorded on their fan-friendly gun was 99 mph, and I was the fastest of anybody in line before or after me. So that day I learned it is much harder to hit over 100 mph than most people think, and to get a big reading, the gun needs to be measuring just after impact.  Glad to hear that I am not the only one underwhelmed with my serve.  :-)
Had taken on those little Bushnell hand held 115mph but that's as fast as it goes. Last legit was at 1997 sporting goods convention in the Prince booth and hit 127mph, not bad after no tennis for a year or two.

you should appreciate your speeds. you are not a professional. i have some pretty good serves. but i have been beaten by people who can just barely get it over the net too, so i became a good returner, something i have to work at that will back up the serve and be there when the serve is not, besides putting a big servers serve back across the net. breaks him down a few button holes since the ego is part of the trust in the big serve.

Hehe, yeah some fall in love with their serve, if it comes back no biggie just play. I actually enjoy snapping off second serves for aces or winners, just another piece to the game.
In the spring, my cousin his police radar gun and I cracked 2 at 131 and 1 at 135. I'm 6'9 just shy of 300lbs. Not a pro by any means, but have always loves serving. My wind down from work, as is the case for many of ya on here, is tennis. I would take my basket out and just work on serving, maybe 500 balls a day. I think that has attributed to the pace I've learned to generate on first and second serve. Even now that I can only play once or twice a week, muscle memory still comes through :)
I've used that Speed Trac X and found it read really badly on shots that are not going directly towards it. I was demonstrating serves to kids at a summer camp and I hit a slice serve that was clearly faster than my flat demo serve at 94 mph. We tried moving the box to get a better read, because we had it inside a cardboard box to prop it up and receive more echo. Finally, one of the kids actually served a ball and busted the screen on accident! lol
