Permalink Reply by CoachV - William Vazquez on March 3, 2011 at 10:01pm Conchita Martinez won Wimbledon in 94.
How about Marcelo Rios, reached number 1 ranking in 98, but never won a Grand Slam.
Better topic of discussion yet, what's better or given the choice, which of these two scenarios would you prefer to achieve?: Winning one grand slam title (one-slam wonder) but never reached number 1 ranking OR reached a number 1 ranking but never won one single Slam? Okay, discuss amongst yourselves. Or maybe the question should be, which one is harder to achieve between the two scenarios?
I totally agree with Mr. Mayor, and good catch on Conchita Martinez. At least for the men the number 1 ranking would be more of a feat without winning a slam. The way ranking points are distributed I would think now more than ever it would be almost impossible. Rios did it, but that was before they changed the points for events.
On another note, Kevin Curren was a beast. Someone else would be Miloslav Mecir. He played great during his day.
