It's interesting that noone wants to touch this thread with a 10 foot pole!
What, is it sacrilege to even mention the idea?!?
I don't know Mark...I don't know. I think it's a legitimate question. Tennis players have tests positive in the past and Nadal is by far one of the most powerful players on the tour....maybe ever! It's a fair question.
Nadal looks absolutely massive this year he has put on some extra upper body muscle.
But to think he is on steroids is ludicrous, do you know what the top players go thro with drug tests.....Under the new regulations, players ranked in the top 50 are required to nominate a one-hour period of every single day when they will be available to be tested.
In december I blogged about Andy Murray's fitness regime, and look at the size of him now compared to a couple of years ago. Nadal has obviously done the same although I do think the pink makes him look bigger.
I watched him beat Hewitt the other day and he is by far and a way the best player at the mo, he just gets everything.
Steroids NO, hard work YES!
More people should try it, it actually works and makes you feel good about yourself.
I know about the ATP drug testing policy about as much as you know of the strategies players, their doctors and trainers use to ensure a negative test. What I find ludicrous is that in 2009 people can have such confidence that an athlete is not on steroids. (that's plain ol' delusional) Manny Ramirez just got caught taking a female fertility pill so that he wouldn't test positive for steroids. Does the ATP have female fertility pills on their band substance list?? You're perfectly entitled to say that you don't think or you doubt Nadal is on steroids, but to say that any suggestion that he may be on steroids is ludicrous, is ignorant. The same way I can't say for sure I know he's on steroids, you can't for sure you know he isn't. We've never seen a tennis player with Rafa's physic and strength. Combine that with the era in which we're living in(steroids/performance enhancing drugs era) I think it makes for a legitimate and not ludicrous topic for discussion.

I always find it funny when people reference to a player's work ethic or workout regiment as if that has anything to with them taking steroids or not. What gives them the ability to do those crazy workouts?? It can very well be hard work and determination like you said. But it can also be steroids! You don't just take steroids and become massive overnight. You still have to do those same crazy workouts. PEDs such as HGH shortens the recovery time of your body, which allows you to do more strenuous activity. That's just one example. There are tons of designer drugs that do all types of unnatural stuff to a players body.

These are the same arguments that were made in Roger Clemens' defense. He worked harder than any other baseball player....Needless to say, we know how that story ended. This is not to say that any athlete who grows in physic is on steroids, but it is to say that just because one "works hard" doesn't mean that he isn't taking steroids.
Do you honestly think that there is someone in the Nadal camp looking for the next sted that the drug testers cant pick up?
Do I think its a valid question, then no i dont, thats why the testers are there and if they are not finding anything wrong then Im not going to go against that.
There are many athletes particularly in sprinting and cycling and in the world of sports that are using steds but they get caught all the time, as you have stated, so as non of the top tennis players have yet to be identified as giving a positive test, I for one will judge them as being clean. Innocent before being proven guilty.
As for no-one in the history having Nadals strength or physique, most of the pros are in the same league, technique plays a big part and sometimes athletes just have the right body proportions etc that makes them condusive to say, court coverage etc like Karlovic is to the serve.
Paula Radcliffe the worlds women's marathon world record holder by a long shot is a staunch advocate of anti drug policy and shows what can be done with hard work, passion and dedication. and if you look at the pics below then it looks to me like a steady progression. He has always had great court coverage and strength, it not like these runners who do 10.20 for 100mtrs then the season later they're running 9.89!

He is very muscular for a tennis player. Does not look freakish-muscular, looks very proportional, appears to be very calm and centered. Usually when they are doped tend to do crazy things and go on 'roid rages. We don't hear about him doing crazy stuff, otherwise it would be all over the media. This guy doesn't appear that way. I think he's all natural a product of hard work. Go Rafa!! He's great!! You gotta love this guy!! Go Rafa!!
Given the kind of testing they do for pro tennis players, not bloody likely. Also stupid to even suggest something like this when you have no evidence other than he's muscular and he's good.
It's a question not an accusation! Hence the term discussion board. If you read the previous postings you would know that the question isn't based solely on the fact he's good or strong. This is an issue that has reared its ugly head in almost every sport in the past few years. What makes tennis exempt from that fact? I ask you Howard, is the question stupid or do you just find someone questioning your beloved Rafa stupid?

I can respect innocent until proven guilty. Nice pics!

Its an interesting discussion and i think perfectly valid, it just irks me a little as it stirs up stuff and creates a negative atmsphere around a particular player like nadal and asks questions of his acheivements.
I understand the nadal lovers not being too happy with the discussion and as Im a big murray fan I can see that his fitness, stamina, muscle growth is even more severe than nadals IMO yet i also know what he has been thro to get to that position.
For me it lays a question of why nadal is running away with things but i dont think he is. He is great on clay but just got beat by fed and Sod, early season murray beat him twice in finals on hard courts (also US open) Fed IMO should have won Wimbledon. In fact a lot of it is mental and if you can get some steds for that then by all means pass them on to me!
if Nadal is using steroids, then so is everyone else on the ATP, WTA Tour, and other sports.

I'm very sure there are many steriod-like drugs on the open and black market.
There is nothing with the bending of any sport drug policy.

Isn't the marriage between bio-science and "hard-work" great for tennis anyway?
