I definitely do not play my regular game, especially my first flat serve or my hard flat groundies. But that does not prevent me from practicing finesse and placement. I may use my spin shots and volleys even more, and vary my spin serves.

All in all, I have a great time playing with seniors in San Bernardino, because I still get a healthy amount of practice on shots an all courter would use. Playing against community college players and other hard hitters, I do miss out on these specialty shots.

What are your adjustments to these types of doubles play?

I do pretty much the same as you do, practice placement shots and sometimes spin shots.  Although I often tone down the spin as well.  I also try to hit the ball where they can realistically return it, as it helps to prolong the rally.  It seems to me though that it's harder to predict where their (beginners) shots are gonna go, as they don't have the fluid motion I see from more advanced players.  A lot of seniors I play are pretty good though, and while their shots lack pace, they are placed very well.  If I see they can handle my game, then it's pedal to the floor, baby!

One of the coaches I play with has incredibly fast hands at the net. He is 57 and does some McEnroe type stuff. Well, I had a light overhead and he insisted on standing there, not giving any ground. I got him on the back of the wrist! He was cool about it.

He's got guts for sure!  And a lot of confidence in his reaction time.  I would be backing up when my opponent has an overhead smash.  One of neighbors is like that too, very fast at the net even though he's 54.  Awesome volleyer.

There's a 4.5 tournament player here in San Bernardino. He really has hands like Mac. He's an All State Insurance broker too. Like Spiderman. Can hit volleys behind his back. I remember hitting a bullet forehand and he volleyed it behind his back!
