Tennisopolis : Tennis Social Network

I play tennis regularly, but have never participated in a USTA league. I've thought about joining one, but just never got around to it. But another reason for not joining is that I've heard horror stories about gamesmanship, overly competitive tennis freaks and overall lack of sportsmanship.

Can anyone comment on this? Do you play in a league and do you enjoy it? I'm about a 4.5 player, but have heard that for USTA leagues, I should go one level down because that's what everyone does.

Also, if anyone has info or comments about singles leagues in the NYC area, I'd definitely be interested in hearing about that.

I can't speak to NYC leauge, but I do play league here in ABQ, and I think there are some shared tendencies. :-)
People can be very very serious about winning. I've seen some yelling matches. Generally, people want strong teams and they'll get the strongest players possible. Once you are ranked on the USTA computer, you can not "play down", but you can "play up" - although most teams don't want a 3.5 player on their 4.0 team.
If you are not in the computer yet, I'd self rate lower so that you can build confidence and be a team hero. ;-)
But if you are not into super competitive, just look for a team that shares your feeling. WE have some laid-back teams and some of the other kind.

Definetely post this in the discussion forum within the Queens and Manhattan and Brooklyn Groups too to get local feedback.

Have fun out there,
