To all: Make sure you turn your shoulders as a unit sufficiently, so that you don't end up chasing a high forward toss and having damage to the shoulder socket. The tendons and ligaments can only stretch so much before injury occurs.
Watch how smooth Ljubicic serves. He never has to jump excessively nor chases an excessively high toss. He keeps the toss where he needs it, where he would extend and not much ball toss drop. He was the ATP ace leader at a time.
Also watch how smooth Federer is on his serve. He and Ljubicic uses a wide oval takeback and does not jerk his elbow back with a tight elbow angle. His windup arm gradually opens up the elbow angle. These are the injury free ways of hitting serves.
If you are taking back the windup on a steep vertical pathway instead of a horizontal one, this is where the danger lies.
