Tennisopolis : Tennis Social Network

I am switching my approach to weight gain.

When I got back from texas I was down in weight from being really sick.

Using basics I consumed 1.5 to 2x my body weight in grams of protein every day. It was good for about 10 lbs in apr. After talking to Joe, our club GM, I have a new approach.

GOMAD = gallon of milk a day. Today is day 3 and I am still on track. The initial discomfort to my stomach is by far the toughest part. I am going to stop when I am 150lbs.

I am open to any general weight/size gain information. Tricks. Idea's. Workouts everything. Whatcha got for me tennisopolis? I struggle to put on weight because of the 45ish hours I spend on the court a week. My metabolism is rediculous. I hit the gym 2x a week for very heavy, very low rep workouts. I can't be the only tennis player that struggles with this...

What is your height and weight right now John?

1-1.5 grams of protein per lb of body weight is a good approach, what did your carbs look like per day? Sounds like the carbs may need adjusting up to account for your daily activity. While protein does build muscle, when someone is trying to gain weight, they will need to support the increased protein with increased carbs so that the additional protein is used for muscle growth as opposed to being used to fuel your energy levels.

How much do you weigh now?

I am 140 right now. The heaviest and best I have ever felt was at 145. So I want to try 150:
When I got really sick I lost 12lbs and left the houston ER at 130.5lbs:
I am 5'8

Everyone tells me that it is good that I feel light on my feet but I don't believe them. I want to be more explosive (olympic lifts) and stronger

how many carbs are you taking in per day on top of the 140-200 grams of protein? If you want to gain good weight, I would shoot for no less than 2g carbs per pound of body weight per day - and primarily complex carbs.

The gallon of milk will help ya gain weight, but not sure it will be the type of weight you want. I mean, a person could also gain 10 pounds or more in a month by eating a jar of peanut butter every day, too. But I don't think a gallon of milk per day or a jar of peanut butter per day is exactly optimal for performance.

I was taking in well over 200 grams of protein per day... I wasn't counting carbs really. I eat pretty good. Even force myself to eat green stuff =)
Also I wont be competing for another month or more. So optimal performance is out, pure weight gain is in
Todd-

I think you are right about the carb situation. Following the big protein meals I was sleepy.
I just want to gain overall size. I will have no trouble turning fat to muscle etc. I need to have something to trim down you feel me?

I have heard the peanut butter idea too... doesn't sound bad for someone in my shoes
Peanut butter, or just go get some big burgers every other day. I remember the days of not gaining weight in my 20's, starts to change in the 30's and definitely 40's. John has plenty of time before that. At 6', 3" I felt my best tennis weight was around 185-195, was fast and strong.
Ya, everyone tells me to just wait and that I will have no problem addings pounds soon enough... but I don't want to wait

... and I love burgers

I have also been getting my protein fix from subways big philly cheese steak sandwich (40grams per 6inch)
John, try powdered protein/carb mix in your water like Endurox - before, during and after playing.  works for me, might work for you too.  it's an added boost in energy, endurance and it also helps with post-tennis muscle soreness...
Protein/carb mix in water? Never tried that.

I have been using cytosport products for a minute (muscle milk, cytomax)
