Can Maria Sharapova still have a long career?
Now that she's returning to action in Indian Wells doubles next week, I'm curious to know what people think of Maria Sharapova's long-term prospects after the slow recovery from her right shoulder injury + surgery. It seems her camp wasn't even sure about how serious it was or how long it would take for her to come back.

Didn't she have surgery on her shoulder before this long lay off or was it during the lay off? This shoulder seems like a lingering problem, and she has been out for so long. If the problems with her shoulder continues, I kinda think she'll hang it up.

She last played in August of '08 and had the surgery in October. The feeling out there is it's worse than her team has let on and they're being very deliberate about releasing news and getting her back on the court. I suppose I can understand on both accounts but the news was getting out before she release any official statements. I don't think that's a good strategy, to say the least.

I think it's probably worse than they are letting on. I mean she's been out for a very long time and her injury doesn't seem to be responding to surgery. I'm not sure what other options she has other than calling it quits. Which would be sad. Women's tennis needs Sharapova, the Williams and others at their best.

Definitely agree that tennis would miss her. I've never been a big fan of her, although I admire her fight. What is the relationship between her serving problems and her shoulder. Which caused which?

Oh the shoulder injury is what brought on the serving yips and other issues. I actually was watching her quarterfinal match at Wimby the year she won it recently, playing against Sugiyama, and it was much more fluid, quicker, and a much lower ball toss. They started tinkering with it when the problems started in 2007 and into 2008.
It really is the crux of her game so without it I'm afraid her career won't be the same. Likewise, I don't love her game per se but I do admire her competitiveness, fight, and intensity - one of the best on Tour in those departments. She has a great mental game but we'll see if it's been affected by this injury and long absence.

I don't know the extent of the injury, I saw here practice last week and see looked to be in good spirits, have the footwork going, and the serve going into the net a lot. Most of the young prodigies leave the game early due to injury, all that play before their bodies have fully developed, I'm afraid the same fate may await Maria.
