Can't swing as much radially on a wood racquet. The wood will not respond as well to windshield wipering. It's not stiff enough and the ball will just drop downwards. This is why they swing the way they do. They have to swing through the ball more to get the power.
Aside from the speed of the shots, their movements look a bit more stiff and sluggish than the athletes today. I am curious though as to how a wood racquet would feel. I did hit with one a long time ago, when I was still very young, but I had no basis for comparison back then.
Well, the serve and volley style is there. They can't hit the groundies at 90-100 mph and max out with wood. That would really be beyond the limits of the frame.
Woo hoo, white tennis balls and wooden racquets! I think tennis fans should petition their Congressmen for a special holiday, called TOSS Day. Tennis, Old School Style! But seriously, these matches always look like they're in slow motion, compared to today's matches.
The full match in its entirety@!! I've always wanted to see more of Laver's 1969 historic Grand Slam. Now I get to see it!!
