For me, if it's Mixed Doubles--a volley, a second serve, and an overhead. The girl has to have a serve that I can attack on and be able to put balls away at the net. The most important thing is someone I can get along with.

For Men's, it's the ability to terminate a point--I'm a setter, so I hit angles and get people to pop balls up, and I need someone who can put the ball away

i got this theory--you need balance. you need someone flashy and a big hitter to go with someone sauve and smooth. that what makes tennis work. the dynamic. BUT You have to get along...

Gary,
Yes. Getting along and a good second serve, as you stated, are important. Knowing where to place the ball, depending on coverage on both sides of the net, is another factor to consider when evaluating a good doubles partner.

here's a killer question...what if you play really well with someone and dominate together, but you despise playing with him... would you?

you ever play with someone that tells you how to play...exactly...so you change your style, yet you don't enjoy it. so when you win, you're not happy. and when you lose, you're crazy unhappy. my solution... i just don't play with them anymore... tennis is just a game, and games are meant to be fun. besides, we're not making money. maybe if we were winning money, i could do it.

In response to your question, ("here's a killer question...what if you play really well with someone and dominate together, but you despise playing with him... would you?"). There are so many variables to consider. Relationships evolve. It is possible that your feelings of contempt could be counter-balanced by respect and admiration because no one else is capable of bringing out your best tennis, to the degree that this guy does. My biggest question is, Where do the ill feelings stem from?
