Lucile, I would argue Oscar was a "game changer" in tennis even before he got into coaching. One of the historic events that is credited with making tennis popular around the world was the adoption of the Davis Cup home and away rule in 1965. Prior to this time, the Davis Cup was always played in a place and on a surface chosen by the team that won the previous year. This kept the Davis Cup in Australia and the US for many years. In 1965, a young Argentinean player got up in London before the ITF and made a motion and then argued if tennis were to grow, the Davis Cup needed to go to the far corners of the globe allowing the rest of the world to see the world's greatest players. Who made the motion and argued successfully for the rule change that is acknowledged by many to have changed the sport for the better? A: Oscar Wegner.
Well, John, you don't have to argue with me - LOL! Hey, great point which I totally forget about. Can you include it in your nomination? THE DEADLINE IS MAY 30TH SO PLEASE GET THOSE NOMINATIONS ASAP!!!!
