His arm is predominantly straight in the backswing, with a closed face to the ground. Then he goes outwards and gets it even more straighter. lol Huge power to be had.
Yeah, that's what I've been working on, figuring out how to get the single bend and keep the balance going forward. I do a little double bend myself. I think it is how he bends the back leg and then lifts straight up while getting the arm straight. I have a video of Rafa practicing at Indian Wells where he limits how much he bends his arm initially as well. It is very easy to fall backwards, but you always go forward, which is great. I have this photo sequence in my blog that is here:
Thanks for you comment Tim. Where do you live? I plan to make another video soon. I've tried to make some corrections/improvements on my strokes. One of my problems is to strain a bit when I move my feet quickly, and it effects coordination with the stroke (especially on the volley), and I don't use strength in my legs enough (and need stronger legs). Also, I've been working on keeping the ball more at distance. I tend to get "crowded" (maybe too much double bend) and lose power. I can see the way my arm wraps around my head. Sometimes too close. This effects rotation also (my body can't keep up with my arm). I've tried to use a straight arm (like Nadal) a little more.
Do you still play?
Man, I like this vid. Double bend Nadal style forehand and stance, interesting because Nadal is mostly single bend but same general swing path motion. Backhand slice with lift, don't see that too often. Serves with backhand and continental grips, all with very good and different forms.
I used to practice for hours by myself in the racquetball court, when I was a racquetball player. Your volleying remind me of those days. I'd get super close and hit rapid balls, like a boxing bag drill.
