Suggest trying with racket in hand  to start, to get it to as real to court movement/ reaction and balanced as possible, adding the resistance load would optimize for the variable ball trajectory

Well, that's alot of explosiveness to be created, switching lunges like that. I'll have to try that without anything in hand first, or do you not recommend that?
