This has been the standard rule since day one. But if you have a heavy topspin forehand, certainly you can hit one over the net man and put the server on the defensive. Also can be done with a lob, the classic "cagey senior" weapon.
Also, if you possess a strong heavy drive forehand down the line, test the net man's backhand volley out and see if he can handle the heat. If he can, then stick to the standard rule.
I like this rule: "Keep playing the active player" unless of course he is the better player. ;-)
