Look at 0:18 and freeze the frame. Fed is way too far from covering the down the line pass. If Novak had went crosscourt, Fed would have to change directions awkwardly too.

Fed made the fatal error that any good serve and volleyer knows: Do not approach on a crosscourt shot, because you will have to cover more ground!
