Is Your Game Only As Good As Your Serve?

Last night, I had a "blind tennis date" with an awesome gal I found on Craigslist. We had a good time - warmed up for about 40 minutes then played two sets. I did pretty good at 6-0 and 6-3, which gives me a boost of confidence going into my league next week.

What was different about playing those two sets compared to my last league match over a month ago? It was one thing - my serve. After my coaching lesson and some great tips from my husband, I finally got my serve pretty consistent. Basically, if I toss the ball correctly, it's going in. Every so often, it even has a little pace to it.

I realized that being confident in my serve allowed me to get ready for my next shot directly after. My previous routine was to hit the serve, and then kind of lolly-gag a bit just to see if it will actually make it in or not. But not last night - I'd serve, then get in ready position for the return.

So now I wonder, is your game only as good as your serve? If you are not confident in your serve, does it affect the way you play the rest of your game? I don't know if that is the case with everyone, but it was certainly the case with me. Generally, even if warm-up goes well, I'm still always nervous when it comes time for my service game. But not last night, and I felt like it made a world of difference.

I can totally relate. I put off working on my serve and it definitely affected my confidence.

The serve sets up the pace of the game. If your not a good server try and make effort to serve it to the returners weaker stroke. Alot of times at the intermediate level all you need to do is just server the ball in. My serve isn't my strong point of my game so what i do is use the serve to set up my strongest asset which is my forehand.

Oh yeah! When my serve is on the game becomes so easy. Ace! Unreturnable! Weak sitter! Unreturnable, game! When that happens my return game gets that much better. I can take huge cuts off the serve and go for winners. I'm sure there some people that love to win points off the ground and are content to just spin the sere in. That's just not my game. Too many people can outrally me off the ground so the serve is so important.
