Ive never heard hitting a ball with a shoe but my instructor made me hit with wood racquets when i started playing to develop a nice smooth swing.  Not to mention, the standard size racquet forced me to really watch the ball.  Also, with the wood racquet , you have to generate all your own power.  I get complimented all the time on the way i swing at the ball.  I recently broke down and finally got a modern racquet (andy murray's model) and i definately can volley much better with it as my adidas racquet has a 80sq in head and it is VERY unforgiving at the net so I got tired of missing the "gimme" volleys (I now realize why lendl struggled at wimbledon- just not enough hitting area)
