Random things about me (hobbies, occupation, tennis history, favorite band, etc.):
I am a single mom to 2 great little boys, Henry & Will. I played tennis in high school--which was a LONG time ago--and now I'm teaching my children. I work in higher education, love to cook/entertain, and in general, just enjoy being outside. I am training for a half-marathon in October, when I'll turn 39. I'm looking forward to meeting some other tennis folks that I can play with.
Favorite pro tennis player(s):
The "old school" crowd: Yannick Noah, Agassi, McEnroe, and Chris E.
My tennis skill (please check your NTRP if you know it):
Not bad., I'm getting there.

Let me know when you are available to play. I can play evenings after 5:30pm and some mornings. I live in Athens.

No worries....I spell it both ways actually. I'm excited to have found the Athens group....I found it on Craig's List actually. Good timing.

Actually the ex and I switch off the children every two days--it's a great custody arrangement--so it generally allows me some "me" time. Thanks for the offer, though.

My kids are so psyched over the "snow" outside....I have a feeling it won't be here long.

Hi Leslie! It's great to have you here!
I see you already joined the Athens Group – fantastic. Invite your buddies.

We are all very excited to have created this "community-based" tennis website which puts the focus on the members.

To get started, please upload a photo or avatar for yourself (if you haven’t already.) Whether it's of you, your dog, your racquet it doesn't matter, but it helps people remember you. You can also personalize Your Page with pictures, links, RSS feeds, colors and more here.

If you are looking to meet people for tennis matches, Look through the Groups or create a Group of your own and invite your tennis contacts. It's a good place to keep in touch with everyone in your circle.

Tennisopolis is also a great place to network with people all across the country and talk about this game we love.

Other places to explore:
- come talk tennis in the forum
- add your own photos
- post your own blog entries.

…and just hang out and meet great people.

Welcome aboard,
Mark

Sounds good, gotta wait for some nice weather. Maybe later in the week...

BTW, my fiance has a ton of experience with kids, so if you ever need someone to keep an eye on them...and I'm sure you'll meet us both if we get together to hit.

No, not really....I actually have a couple of students who are looking (nearly all of our students are adult students--so these are people also needing a career as opposed to just a job--though at this point, they're not picky!)....but I'm happy to let you know of anything that I hear about.

Let's get together soon to hit some balls....lord knows I need the practice!!

Just as I suspected with the whole lack of turnover situation here in Athens. I'm suprised your friend is having trouble in a huge metro area like Atlanta. I've often thought about commuting to the city, but then decided it wasn't worth it to me.

I agree about the networking thing. I don't get out there as much as I probably should, but hopefully this site will lead to some of that. It's just a little hard to stay positive through this, so maybe playing a little tennis will help.

Do you of any openings or anything, really, anything?

Wow....right now is definitely NOT a good time to be looking for a job--the economy is really awful. I have a good friend in ATL that has been unemployed for over a year now--and he had an incredible career prior. He says there's just nothing out there. Finding professional/career-type work in Athens is tough all the time. The market here is very saturated--with a bunch of UGA grads (like myself) that refuse to leave, LOL. You may want to get in touch with the Chamber of Commerce to see if they have anything (like networking opportunities or a job board) that could hook you up. The other KEY thing in Athens is knowing someone--this is a small town with a lot of "connected" people so just getting involved (volunteering, etc) will introduce you to folks + give you an "in" when it comes to finding out about jobs. Obviously UGA is the biggest employer here--so check their listings regularly.

I have a BA in Art History and a MEd in Adult Education. I want to get my EdD eventually but can't even think about that right now--being single mom to a 6 and 3-year old is enough work for me!!

Its not about whether I can whoop anyone's tail (although playing competitively is good for your game), its about getting out there on the court, working on your game, and, ultimately, having a good time playing a sport we love.

What were your studies in at UGA? Melissa (my fiance) is in the college of Family and Consumer Sciences (specifically child development).

Also, we've been in Athens for about 5 months now, and I'm having a hell of time finding a good job. I have a BA in Economics and Czech, and have experience in banking, business development, and am particularly good in customer service. I've been offered cashier and teller positions, but at this point I'm interested in building a career. Any ideas?

Thanks.
