Did Nike pour $75 million down the drain?

2010 Australian Open - Day 1
So this is my way of saying that I don’t understand the corporate mind. In the same way that I do not understand how corporations could have miscalculated so badly on the Tiger Woods brand, I do not get why Nike thinks that today’s Sharapova is worth 75 million dollars. And if you watched her match against Kirilenko yesterday, you saw everything that is currently wrong with Maria Sharapova.

Go here for the rest of this entry and here for my blog. And thanks as ever for reading.

LOL! too late -- the National Enquirer already found him at a rehab facility in Mississippi.

and yes it hurts me that Federer gets ignored. i think that he is much more deserving of this paycheck. but clearly Sharapova represents the demographic they're appealing to. what majorly pisses me off is that their failures get passed on to the consumer resulting in over-priced shoes and clothes. grrrr..

75million is a decent price for an "Anna K with titles". Nike should have had that shoulder looked at if she signed that contract after the injury. Madison avenue has never gone broke betting on the white male sex drive. Here in Chicago we have a Niketown and after Fed's history making summer there is no mentioning of his achievements. Tennis is a niche market here, so I understand if they don't promote it as much. However, who do they use to promote their new hoodie in November? The two best singles players in the world (Serena and Fed)? No! They use MaSha and Rafa! So Nike knows how to promote her. Its up Yuri and team Sharapova to get that shoulder right. If not Nike will move on to the next star. That's the problem with Nike, Walmart, Disney, etc.. they have the huge money to bury their failures and never take a public hit.

PS Tiger, If they try to make you go to rehab just tell 'em, "NOOO, NOOO, NO!"
