I'd like to add my two cents to the conversation. Pertaining directly with the U.S.T.A. rating system and the inner details that should be added to help create a better valued numerical process that all can appreciate. The 1.0 to 7.0 rating system is quite broad and no matter how you disect the balance coordinates the system itself is designed to give players and coaches a guide to assess a players "playing performance" and be able to do a comparison analysis with regard to other players to place him/her in the proper level group. I'd like to say that the .5 or half value added to each numerical value can be even more intricate. I was thinking of creating a more specific function to the system where the U.S.T.A can add a .25 to the over-all base level(s). Instead of saying that you need a specific component to your game in order to qualify to be labeled a 4.0 you'd actually have to work on your game either in a lesson or cooperative hitting format to increase your chances of being rated more accurately. This can be very confusing for those at the recreational level if they don't understand the format being utilized out-side the traditional club back-ground. This is called the N.T.R.P. which is a measuring utility to guage how well you play and what your playing level is. If you need any further information about what I have just mentioned, please feel free to contact me directly. Have a great season.
Sincerely,
Jason Lampione.

Mixed doesn't affect your rating much if you play adult. The Usta gave me a mixed exclusive 3.5 last week. I was on a 6.0 squad that made sectionals (I think that we could have won it if they had used some different lineups) My 7.0 record was abysmal. I choked away a bunch of squeakers. Check the link on my page and you'll see what I mean. My 3.0 squad made nationals in 2k7 so I felt I had to defend that B by my rating everytime I took the court! Defend your B with honor!

I was exclusively playing Mixed dubs as well but decided to join my first adult league at 3.5 and it so happened that the team made it to districts!!! I still ended up with a crappy 2-4 record but the captain wanted to give me some experience in districts so i got to play on the last day on Sunday and lost! I guess i was benchmarked for just playing in districts! Do you know if playing mixed dubs affects your record? I was 5-0 in mixed and won a match in districts! Damn i should have just stuck to playing mixed leagues!

I missed the dreaded bump by playing mixed leagues exclusively in 2k9. My mixed record coupled with my tournament showings showed that 3.5 was the place for me. The thing is in my early start league I beat a guy that got the bump. Can't wait to school those 3.0's that were forced to make the jump. I'm the big fish now! welcome to my pond! lol!

I can't appeal because i was benchmarked at 4.0. I wish i could though.
I hear you. If I was you I would protest this time and "take it like a man" next time. :-)
Definitely want to get more 3.5 years under your belt. However, playing against 4.0s will improve your game faster.

Well i just started playing league 2 years ago at 3.5 and reach districts in a few of my leagues(Mixed,Adult). I feel that i was bumped up too fast and didn't get to enjoy myself at 3.5.
