Playing Virtual Tennis With Real Rackets from the NYT

OK, this is in no way a replacement for playing on a court but it sounds like things are getting closer. With two daughters in the house, I'm not sure i'll be introducing this into the Wii gear in our house

If you have ever played virtual tennis on a Nintendo Wii, you know the feeling of flailing your arms around in mid-air while trying to lob an invisible ball through space. You also most likely know that there is one important component missing from the game: the feeling of a real tennis racket.

Electronic Arts hope to solve that problem, teaming with Sakar Internationalto offer a new set of sporting equipment that will mesh with your Wii gaming console. The accessories include golf clubs, tennis rackets and baseball bats, and can be used with a standard Wii Remote control.

To use the tennis racket, for example, you simply slip the Wii Remote into the handle of the racket, slide on a John McEnroe headband and it’s game time. But be warned, these accessories don’t play well with lampshades or vases filled with flowers; in tight quarters they can be a little difficult to use.

The sporting add-ons work with most Wii sports games including Grand Slam Tennis, Mario Tennis, Top Spin 3, Tiger Woods PGA Tour and Wii Sports. The accessories will cost $14.99 to $29.99.
