Opinions needed: Can you tell a player's level by looking at his/her racquet setup?

Comment by Am on May 31, 2011 at 11:31am: nice match yesterday, i knew something was weird when that guy had a new BLX bag and used a wood racquet to warm up and play most of the first set. I don't think you can tell how good a player is by the equipment they're using but more so with how they play with it. I think he was almost giving us a handicap? Good three-set win though.

and when he pull it out I thought he is a old school player that was going to teach me a thing or two After a few min of warm up I sent a backhand cross court threw the strings and if there were no strings so he borrowed one of my practice racquets wich or good racquets and it was all down hill from there for him, but what really is deceiving is one time I played in a adult open/Nrp tourny and I was looking for somebody to warm up with and this one guy was deck out from head to toe in Adidas a 12 pack racquet bag so I pick him to hit with after about three min I was fed up he could not return the ball could not get the ball over the net then my dad Called and

told the guy sorry man we cant do this anymore we have to find somebody else and asked him what event he was playing in he said 3.5 I would swore he was and ATP Player.

So I think can be more deceving than Raquets

Comment by Steve Fly on May 4, 2011 at 11:57am: I think that sometimes it can give you a hint, but I've met plenty of guys who were wearing some addidas indoor soccer shoes and playing with Wal-Mart rackets who smoked me pretty easily (I'm a 4.0), and I've run into plenty of guys outfitted with the newest gear, and RPM strings who push it around and are easy to beat on.

Comment by Dennis P on May 3, 2011 at 11:34pm: I'd say no, I can't tell. My friend still uses his old Dunlop Max 200G, the racquet used by Steffi Graf during her heyday. He's one of those frustratingly rare people who can pick up their game, even with a long absence from tennis. He played high school varsity in the late 80's. Looking at his gear, you'd think he'd his strokes would be as old as his gear. But's it's a "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" experience when he's beaten you 6-2 and you realize he's still got game.

There was a Pro/instructor sneaking in with a member for a hitting/lesson ( I watch the whole thing and it was a lesson ) Well long story short. his strings were popped and he asked to borrowed my woody. Sure. ( anything for a member right? ) Well the Guy is hitting like a pro, to start off, Im checking out his racquet a Babolat Beam Type racquet like robby ginepri, that was Ballanced correctly in all points of the head, neck and inside the handle. so its either he has had a professional stringer or coach do it or he is a pro/instructor. so I stayed a bit longer watching ( aka court police ) and Yep hes a pro teaching. If he didn't Bring his personal playing racquet & Talk smack about how " HE " was balancing his racquet to mimic Pistol Pete's old 6.0 for the days long ago. He would have gotten away with stealing from the club.

Comment by Diana Martin on May 2, 2011 at 10:59pm: Yes & No. Most of the time you can tell whether what level the person is by their stuff. If someone has a really old racquet, they may have fallen out of the tennis circle and just coming back and haven't updated their gear. If they have a huge frame, they might be a beginner that can't control their own power, not really understanding the control issues. Then there are people that will surprise you. Someone can have all the right stuff, new racquet, strings, over grip and their just at a beginning level, then there are people who used to play a lot and they're still really talented and have old gear, you might underestimate their skill level, but they can beat you with a 2x4.
