Tennis elbow, a sore back, and lack of on-court focus are all tennis related issues that no player wants to deal with. More and more players are turning to yoga to fix these hindrances and step up their game.
The City of Miami knows how to keep it's populace fit and fabulous, offering complimentary waterfront yoga at Bayfront Park, three times a week. Add just one of the classes to your fitness regimen and incorporate the yoga techniques you learn to your pre and post-game stretching, and you will see instantaneous results!
“You’re getting a lot of benefits at once,” says Kathleen Stroia, vice president of Sport Sciences & Medicine and PRO U at the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, listing breathing control, concentration, flexibility, strengthening, and propeoception (your body’s awareness in space). Yoga will also help you relax and reduce stress, allowing you to step on court with more concentration and focus. “I see the breathing control and mind control as being the best benefits from yoga,” Stroia says. “There are very few other activities that you’re doing in your tennis training that are focused on that.”
Free Yoga at Bayfront Park is held outdoors by the bay, located at the Tina Hills Pavilion (south end of the park). All participants must be at least 18 years old and will have to sign a waiver. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis and the instructor will determine when the class is "full." Everyone must bring their own yoga mat, water, and towel.
Classes are held every:
Monday & Wednesday: 6:00pm-7:15pm
Give a class a try, because whether you’re a beginner or talented tennis pro, practicing yoga will benefit your body both physically and mentally. It is just what you need to win!
