John Isner breaks "Casino Curse" at Newport, Rhode Island


American John Isner broke the 34 year old “Casino Curse” by winning the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Championships title at Newport, Rhode Island in a straight set victory against Olivier Rochus 6-3, 7-6(6). The “Casino Curse” extended back to 1976 and was a curse on all number one seeds. Vijay Amritraj was the last number one seed to win the grass court event at Newport. The big-serving John Isner now has two ATP World Tour singles titles, with his first occurring in Auckland, New Zealand in 2010.

 

John Isner’s Path to the 2011 Newport Title 

  • First Round: defeated Karol Beck  6-3, 6-2
  • Second Round: defeated Arnaud Clement  7-6(6), 6-4
  • Quarterfinals: defeated [5] Alex Bogomolov Jr.  7-6(5), 6-4
  • Semifinals: defeated [8] Tobias Kame  7-5, 7-6(4)
  • Final: defeated [6] Olivier Rochus  6-3, 7-6(6)
