In 1997 the unknown Gustavo Kuerten won the French Open.
In 2002, the ghost of Martin Verkerk made
the final and in 2004, the artist formerly known as Gaston Gaudio won the whole
thing.
In a related story, Gaudio also sends
Guillermo Coria a paper bag full of cash and a card on the day of the men’s
final each year that reads:
Dear Guillermo,
Thanks for graduating with honours from
the Greg Norman, ‘this is how to spectacularly choke away the big one’ School,
near the end of the third set.
I love you
Gaston
The French are random and volatile and so is the tournament.
As a result, don’t expect a professor like breakdown of the men’s draw because it’s just not worth it.
