It remains to be seen whether the reigning US Open champion, Juan Martin del Potro, will be fit enough to defend his title later this month. The Argentinean hasn’t played since the Australian Open at the beginning of the year.

He reached the fourth round in Australia but was struggling with a wrist injury during the tournament. The injury didn’t clear up and del Potro was forced to have an operation. The injury forced del Potro to miss the French Open and Wimbledon as he recovered from the surgery in a frustrating few months.

It was thought del Potro would make his comeback at the Paris Masters or the Thailand Open. Whisperings have now emerged that the 21 year old may now be fit enough to compete at Flushing Meadows. He has recently returned to training and will have till the 30th of August to prove his fitness.

It may happen that taking part in US Open betting has come a month or so too soon for del Potro. He won’t want to rush back and risk his injury. After missing so much of this season, del Potro will be determined to make up for it next season.

Last year was something of a breakthrough season for del Potro, along with winning the US Open, he reached the quarter-final of the Australian Open and the semi final of the French Open.

On his day, Tennis betting odds suggest he can beat anybody on the circuit. At six foot six, del Potro possesses one of the best serves out there. He is also able to move around the court exceptionally well for a tall fellow. If he does make it to Flushing Meadows, not many players will fancy taking on del Potro.
