Federico Luzzi, former world number 92, has died of leukemia aged 28, the Italian tennis federation said on Saturday. A statement said Luzzi had died in hospital in his home town of Arezzo after suffering a rapid form of the disease.

He was playing in a club match in Sardinia last Sunday when he retired because of a strong fever which was initially believed to be some form of bronchopneumonia.

However tests at the San Donato hospital in Arezzo, found that he actually had leukaemia. He was transferred to the hematology department but didn't respond to the treatment and slipped into a coma and died during resuscitation.

RIP Federico and condolences to his family, friends and fans.
