What was happening with the Williams sisters today ??
They were both stunned in the third round Friday by journeywomen who never have been quarterfinalists, much less champions, at any
Grand Slam tournament.
Third-seeded Serena Williams lost in a stunning 6-4, 6-4 decision to Katarina Srebotnik. Ten hours later, as darkness fell on Roland Garros, her sister, Venus Williams, lost to Flavia Pennetta 7-5, 6-3.
"I wasn't nervous," Serena said. "She was getting a lot of balls back, and I might have let that get into my head. She was just making some shots I don't think she's ever made before, or she probably would be in the top two."
Pennetta took a more unorthodox path to beating a Williams, hanging with Venus through long baseline exchanges. In the second set, as the light faded, Pennetta won seven of the 10 points that lasted 10 or more strokes.
"It wasn't a good day for our family but we always plan to get more determined," said Venus, who lost the 2002 final to her sister.
So instead of holding the trophy as lot of people expected, Williams sisters are packing their bags. Really bad day for them...
