In a mixed 9.0 doubles, would a 4.5Men/4.5women pair be stronger than a 5.0men/4.0women?

There are various opinions on this topic.  Some says that the 4.5/4.5 combination has an edge because a 4.5 woman typically have more complete game and better volleying skills on the net than a 4.0 woman.

The other camp says that a 5.0men in the 5.0/4.0 pair can dominate the game as a whole, so much that it will compensate for his 4.0 partner. So he will be able to dominate both of the 4.5/4.5 opponents and at the same time 'carry' his 4.0 partner much better (or at least 'better') than a 4.5 man can.

Of course there are a lot of factors that can make a difference such as the individual players strengths and weaknesses or how compatible the pairing is in general.

Hmm ... What do you guys think?

Dear LuvTennis,

In my personal and professional opnion, it really doesn't matter how you "slice" it because the biggest factor in any doubles game is the approach off strategy and tactics implemented and how you execute each shot. The game of tennis is nothing more than anticipation, strategy/tactics, philosophy and movement. Your partner is only a small factor in the bigger picture to the contribution to the "whole." You need to play with different players and see if you have chemistry and connection with one you desire to play with most, this is a great starting point, find that connection and build your game around that. You can be playing with Marina Hingis as your doubles partner, if the connection is weak, so will be your results. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Jason Lampione.
