Q: I know being dehydrated impacts my performance. So how do I know if I’m adequately hydrated?

A: The easiest way to know if your body has enough fluids is by monitoring your trips to the bathroom. If you need to use the bathroom every two to four hours, says sports nutritionist and author Nancy Clark, then you’re probably doing OK.

“During school hours, if you need to go to the bathroom before lunch and before an afternoon practice and your urine is light in color, like lemonade, you’ve had enough to drink,” says Clark, who notes that feeling foggy, tired and having a headache are also signs of dehydration. “If you go from 8 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon without peeing, and when you go, your urine is dark and concentrated, you’re under-hydrated. You’ll start practice in the hole.”
