Thanks for the info - much appreciated !
Since we will be flying in from Vancouver, we need to find a good source for camping equipment, assuming it will not be too cold for the outdoors. Any leads for such would be immensely helpful..
Gibby,
In the evening, it could get a bit chilly. You probably will find it very pleasant since you are coming from Vancouver. ;-)
Here's the campsite where I stayed before:

It is about 15 minutes drive away from the Tennis Garden. Beautifully situated at the bottom of the foothill, with a spectacular view of the Palm Desert. Here's a pix from the campsite:
There are sites for RV and sites for tent camping. RV sites also have electrical hookup which I found convenient for charging laptop and camera batteries. ;-) Now the secret is out. I hope I'll be able to find a spot there in the future. ;-)
I assume that you are renting camping equipments, right? Are you flying in to Palm Springs or Los Angeles? I don't any good source for renting in Palm Springs area. I'm sure there are some outfitters in the desert. If you fly in to Los Angeles, you can stop by the REI store near the LAX and rent all the camping gears that you need:

If you are looking for RV camping, there are plenty of RV parks around.
Most cheap, clean motel are pretty much reserved ahead of the tournament. You might get lucky sometimes when there's cancellation. You can also check craigslist too. You can find condos, houses, timeshares, or rooms to rent nearby too.
Let me know if you need other info. Enjoy your stay in the lovely Palm Desert. See you around at the tournament.

Hi tennisbum,
Thanks for the excellent camping info (looks beautiful indeed) and yes it will probably be very pleasant for us Eskimos in the cool of the night. Love shopping at REI and there is a store in Las Vegas as well which is where we will be touching down.
Look forward to seeing you, our friend Yanina and the rest of the gang at the tournament !
If you do ended up at that campsite, make sure you talk to the front gate. They close the road entrance pretty early in the evening. When I last stayed there, I usually get back to the site around midnight. Make sure you get the padlock combination from the staff if that's what they are still using so you can get back in after the late night matches, which there will be plenty of. ;-) Enjoy the place. I kinda miss it. Maybe I'll camp out again next year. ;-)
Don't forget to cheer for Milos. ;-)
