Random things about me (hobbies, occupation, tennis history, favorite band, etc.):
I've been away from playing competitive tennis for many many years. I was rated for Open division but given a 5.5+ for league play. I was a USTA volunteer, part of the Tennis for Public Schools Program for Oakland and SF. Most recently, I have been giving private coaching and instruction to juniors and adults in the Tri-Valley area. I have also coached East Bay USTA Ladies 3.0 to 4.0 teams and local high schools, both girls and boys. My first season the team and I had a 10-0 record at Cal. I was a long time member of the USTA and USRSA. Was also a certified racquet stringer.

In 2002 I had hand surgery for a metacarpal boss. Over some years before with the ailment and months of rehab, I fell out of touch with my many tennis contacts, business and social. I had to stop all tennis activity and never quite got back to the sport although I have become a pretty good guitar player.

As of 8/09, I started a new leaf. Tennis has been a huge part of my life I've always enjoyed competitive or social. I want to get back to the sport and give back to the community. I just joined Tennisopolis and also started a new tennis group called: Tri-Valley Tennis Assn. 2010, Currently Director/coach for Youth Tennis League in San Ramon, at Dougherty High. Also helped the Clubsport 7.0 Mix Combo, for 2011. If you live in the area, I welcome you to join TVTA.
Favorite pro tennis player(s):
I don't follow professional tennis much since the likes of Rafter, Sampras and Agassi left the game. I do remember the old pros, Laver, Rosewall and watching TV matches of Nastase, Newcombe, Lendl, McEnroe, Wilander, Edberg, Becker, and Connors. Those were the days of exciting tennis. If I had to pick a current pro, I'd have to say Federer and Sharapova but I don't follow them. I have more fun with real people and friends like you.
My tennis skill (please check your NTRP if you know it):
Getting there
On the court, I am a:
rightie, chip-n-charger, slicer, doubles partner, singles player, acer, returner, one-hander, grunter, all courter, gracious winner, gracious loser
My favorite local courts:
Outdoors at Central Park, Athan Downs, Osage, Cal HS

    Marina,
I forgot my Wilson K - Tennis Racquet last week at Dougherty High School. My name is John and I played doubles against your husband and lost. I'm so forgetful these days. The racquet is partly blue with a black grip wrap. Dudley mentioned that your husband has it. Let me know when you'll be playing with Dudley's group again, and I'll make sure to meet you folks there. Or email me at drjohnnguyen@yahoo.com or call my cell at 510-219-4701. Thanks...john.

    Hi Dudley,

That was a fun match. I felt very confident. I really appreciate all of the helpful strategy tips Please feel free to share more if you see any obvious shortcomings. I'm a work in progress and I'm OK with it!

    Hi Dudley,
I am really looking forward to getting back into tennis. How does this Thurs night drop-in work? Do I need to bring a partner or are there others looking for partners? Also, I see these rankings (I am assuming they are rankings) of 2.5, 3.0, 4.5, etc. How do I know what I am? I'd love to come tonight if it doesn't get too hot. I have a meeting at 7pm in Danville so I could only stay for a little while. Thanks... Lisa
  • Lisa Lundquist

Hi Dudley... that was awesome!!! I am so looking forward to playing more and getting back into tennis. Until tonight, I haven't played in over 12 years... way too long to be off the court. Seems like great group of people too! Thanks again... Lisa

Hi Dudley, I love Cherryl Silva! My name is Alissa Cohan and I handle the marketing for the USTA NorCal office. Saw this opportunity and thought I was in heaven.
  • Derek

no problemo Dudley. despite your absence, i was able to play. the players were very welcoming when i arrived at the courts. would like to play other players in the 3.0 - 4.0 range. hopefully next time i will have the opportunity to say hi to you and introduce myself to the other players as well :) thanks Dudley!
  • Alex Hwang

Hi Dudley. This is ridiculous but I'm replying to you after more than a year. I'm unfamiliar with how this forum works and just assumed I never got a response from you from my initial posting a year ago asking about the doubles ladder. I'll be checking out the Thursday tennis group at D.V.H.S. for the first time today...granted it's still going on. Hopefully, I'll run into you soon and introduce myself. Thanks!

Stan Smith, not a bad guy to have strokes similar to. Hope trying a hybrid or full poly helps you out.

  • Brad S

I just joined your group and would be most interested in playing with players at the 4.5 level.  Do you expect such players during your Tue/Thr get-togethers at Dougherty High?
  • Brad S

I thought your name sounded familiar, and yes, I was a member of Tomodachi for many years before moving on to league play with the USTA.  Are there many 4.5/5.0 players in your group?
  • Brad S

Oops, I accidently scratched a prior message I posted, but anyway, was wondering if you might be interested in hitting some sometime.  I'd be willing to meet you in San Ramon/Dublin...let me know.
  • Brad S

Rain, the bane of every tennis instructor's existence with the exception of those fortunate enough to teach indoors.  I haven't been affected as much as far as being an instructor since my last job teaching tennis ended in Sept 2010 but of course playing time has been limited since I don't belong to any Club Sport.  Let me know when the weather improves and you are able to take time out of your busy schedule...
  • Ticia Schmitz

    Dudley..

    Love to play !

  • Ticia Schmitz

    That would be great !!
  • Marina Bauk

Hi Dudley. Dragan and I have been playing in Walnut Creek a lot with our friends. The thing about Thursdays is that I work till 6, even 6:30 sometimes. By the time I get home and get ready and drive to San Ramon, it gets late. But we hope to make it one of these days. I would love to play with you guys again. Take care.
  • Marina Bauk

    Sounds good.

I think I am off next Thursday. I might stop by.

  • Lendl Jr. (4.5)

    Hi dudley,

yeah, i remember when tennis was PRIME time Television. I was glued to the tv watching those players...... the american players, the swedes, spanish, french players, Ivan Lendl; all of which had SUCH different styles...You never really knew who would win the big tournaments.   Ivan Lendl was actually a very generous person.   When I was in high school he was #1 in the world and he came to my little hometown (corpus christi, tx) and played an exhibition against Steve Denton to raise money for a man who needed a heart transplant (Terry Kalenda).  They raised the money for the transplant and he is still alive to this day!  I sat very close to the action and the speed of the game was actually faster than i thought it would be.  People today say the players of the 80's hit the ball casually but i saw it with my own eyes and they dont know what they are talking about.... Nice to meet you to

  • monica liu

Dudley, Thanks for the note, I'm doing ok, still trying to find time for tennis.  Glad to see that your group continues to get together.  Best, Les

Thank you!! I had a lot of fun and everyone was really nice and welcoming (I just wished I warmed up more before we started - then we would have beaten them for sure!!). Definitely game for next time... I am actually in town all next week and have a very flexible schedule - would love to play as much as I can every day/almost any time!!
  • Natasha Amarelle

Thanks for the serve tips, I'll definitely be working on them next time I'm out hitting. I should get some friends to take some nice photos of me at the courts so I have a good profile picture Lol.
  • Hal Wagner

Hey Dudley, with that teaching cart I just make sure to check the wheels and keep them fully tightened. They tend to work themselves loose and then mess up the threads and strip out.
  • Raj Merchant

Hey Dudley, I will be at DVHS  on Tuesday 8/30 at 5.15p. Looking forward to seeing you there and meeting the others too.

    Raj Merchant

  • Raj Merchant

Hi Dudley, Thank you very much. I am also looking forward to being there and meeting you and making more friends. Mardy Fish is going great guns, do you think Federer and Nadal are now fading stars?
  • Raj Merchant

    Thanks Dudley.
  • Ivan Yudhi

Thanks Dudley... Where did you go? You suddenly disappeared :)
  • Julie

Hey Dudley- what kind of racket do you play with? I have a Wilson that I got in 1990. Time for an update! Suggestions?
  • Julie

Hey Dudley thanks for the info. So I can try out a racket before I buy? I need so much help! And I dont know what my "style" is. All I know is I like to slam it hard when I can- its such a gret stress relief! lol

Exciting tennis today at the US Open! So is Serena the new John McEnroe????? Also that 5 sets from yesterday! Fun to watch. The Davis Cup was here a few months ago- that was fun too!

Question- why do I always get a blister on my thumb? Is my grip the wrong size?

    Thanks again!

    Julie
