Phoenix Tennis Ball Plant Returning to the Ashes

Head, the Amsterdam sports-equipment producer that creates the Penn ball brand, said it would close its tennis-ball plant in Phoenix on March 5. In January 2007, Head began producing tennis balls in China and since then has increased output there. It's now closing the U.S. plant and will produce all its tennis balls from China. A statement from the company on Wednesday didn't specify how many employees are affected by the move or how much the closing would cost.

I'm actually shocked… Continue

Alternative Income Idea: Stringing Racquets

Do you want to make a little side cash while you are watching TV? The Passive Dad blog posted this great article about stringing rackets for dough.

If you play tennis weekly or enjoy hitting hard top spin shots, you have probably had to have your rackets restrung several times. Tired of paying a club or someone else for a tennis restring?… Continue

ATP Screenning at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin

Last weekend we had this screening in Berlin. We screened all qualified players of the Masters Cup in Shanghai on two walls at Checkpoint Charlie. It was really fun to work with these heavy-duty projectors and see the results on the wall.

For example Roger Federer (in front you see the historic border between FRG and DDR - the sign on the right side says: "You are leaving the american sector!"):

We showed him the pictures and he… Continue

Where can I get a Vamos! ceramic travel mug?

Does anybody know where I can get a Nadal-inspired Vamos! ceramic travel mug? There's a site that advertises on Tennisopolis that sells them, but they are out of stock. I've looked around but with no success. It looks like this:

Sock It To Me, Baby

protrainer winsock tennis training gear

I'm not normally one for tennis gadgets and "get great quick" schemes, so I'm always a bit skeptical of any tennis gear that Jack Kramer himself wouldn't use. You can call me a traditionalist. So, when the guys at ProTrainer Tennis asked me to demo their new… Continue

One On One Doubles -- New Singles Game Concept

I attended the USTA Tennis Block Party on Saturday at the HCC Campus in Tampa, Florida. One of the events at the block party was One on One Doubles..... this is a new concept in singles play that is highly competitve, fast paced and a great workout!

Basically you play a cross court singles match using the doubles court. Serve and volley or you lose the point! (Good volley work for baseliners like me!) The founder, Ed Krass, is a Blues aficionado and pumps out the tunes during… Continue

THE LOW DOWN: A-Rod leans left, steps out of political closet

Sporting political muscle: Though most athletes tend to either shy away from political speak to focus "on their games", some do actually embrace the moment. The most recent example was, of course, the out-spoken… Continue

One wrong thing messes it all up

Ever felt that there was something missing when you were learning something? You see how it's done, you know you can do it, and yet over and over you just can't and you don't know why. And then something clicks, and all of a sudden, you've got it, no prob.

This happened to me when I was learning the "dinky serve", that fall back serve where you throw up the ball and tap it into the other court. The first time I tried it, I couldn't get it to go consistently into the other… Continue
