Top 5 Controversies of 2009

Talk about modern tennis and do not mention the word DRAMA. Sounds inconceivable...Doesn't it? Well, after the end of the 2009 tennis season, highlighted by a series of controversies, we find it important for the world to re-visit those stirring moments that left a mark on the Sport.

CONTROVERSY....! A word that draws more attention than the best things in life one could ever possibly imagine. We wonder, sometimes, whether there is any walk of life where there is any dearth of it.… Continue

So Safina bailed on her beat down

Sony Ericsson Championships - Doha 2009 - Previews

...Safina has bailed on the entire event. She flew to Doha, posed for pictures (wearing some of the most garish makeup and the most god-awful black outfit I have ever seen), went out on court, posed with Jankovic, warmed up, played two games, and then bailed. She said that her back was hurting. To quote her, “My body just gave up, and I couldn't handle the pain anymore”.… Continue

US Open Preview - No All-Williams final in New York

Ever since their breakthrough runs in New York in the late nineties, Venus and Serena Williams have dominated the circuit for more than a decade. However and interesting draw allows only one of the Williams to reach the final this year.

Allegations of her not giving her 100% at the non-grand slam events have also fumed a controversy regarding her capabilities and actual deliverance.…

2009 FRENCH OPEN: WOMEN’S DRAW PREVIEW

“If I continue like this I have a very good chance here (at Roland Garros).”

No sh*t, Dinara! Safina has a 14-1 record on clay this season and the added confidence of being World No. 1 and last year’s runner up to the now-ailing Ana Ivanovic. Like Rafael Nadal on the men’s side, I had no trouble filling in Safina’s little section of the French Open draw.

The rest gets messy.

It’s going to be a battle to face Dinara… Continue

Is Jelena Jankovic the real deal?

When Jelena Jankovic first assumed the No.1 ranking this summer, her ascension was largely greeted with surprise and disbelief. This was a woman who at the elderly age of 23 had not made it past a grand slam semi-final in her career, who admittedly had played a vast number of matches, but had not succeeded in converting them into titles, and was at the time losing at the quarter-final stage, week-in, week-out. Amelie Mauresmo and Kim Clijsters both reached No.1 two years before they won a… Continue
