What About Ana?

This former World No. 1 has failed to live up to early expectations following her 2008 French Open title. Still, Ana Ivanovic's game is a pattern of solid strokes and aggressive strategies. An offensive baseline attacker, Ivanovic also possesses a big, if unsteady serve. Inspired by Monica Seles, Ivanovic makes her living on the baseline, slugging out flat forehands similar to Maria Sharapova and her…

Well that was a quick hello goodbye

CINCINNATI - AUGUST 14: Ana Ivanovic of Serbia receives medical attention after suffering a foot injury causing her to retire during her semifinal match against Kim Clijsters of Belgium on day six of the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open on August 14, 2010 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. I try not to get excited about Ana Ivanovic. It’s not that I don’t enjoy watching her play, because I do. It’s just that I don’t like investing myself emotionally in players about whom I am uncertain of their level of commitment to tennis. Consequently I have avoided becoming emotionally invested in Ana… Continue

Sharapova & Ivanovic: The Burden of Being a Brand.

With her first round loss to Maria Kirilenko at the Australian Open, Maria Sharapova’s comeback is still slowly getting back on track in 2010. Though in her press conference Sharapova confidently said “I’ll

be back on a second Saturday. You’ll see.”, her “second career” is not just about hitting tennis balls.

With her reported new deal with Nike worth $70 million dollars over eight years, Sharapova is still the highest paid female athlete.…

A Sunday for Second Chances: ATP Miami Final Preview

A fortnight ago, Andy Roddick came up just short against the startlingly resurgent Ivan Ljubicic in the Indian Wells final, a match that the top-ranked American entered as the distinct favorite. After a sparkling semifinal triumph over Rafael Nadal, Roddick now has the opportunity to expunge his desert disappointment by capturing the Miami title. Yet his opponent has hurtled into the final Sunday on a Ljubicic-worthy run, during which he…

2009 FRENCH OPEN: WOMEN’S DRAW PREVIEW

“If I continue like this I have a very good chance here (at Roland Garros).”

No sh*t, Dinara! Safina has a 14-1 record on clay this season and the added confidence of being World No. 1 and last year’s runner up to the now-ailing Ana Ivanovic. Like Rafael Nadal on the men’s side, I had no trouble filling in Safina’s little section of the French Open draw.

The rest gets messy.

It’s going to be a battle to face Dinara… Continue
