Today is quarterfinal day at the Citi Open in College Park, Maryland. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 8th seeds all survived early rounds and are ready to battle their opponents on the other side of the net and the heat. It was a suffocating kind of heat yesterday afternoon when I arrived at The Tennis Center at College Park, but after the first match and a half it seemed to cool off a bit. This afternoon, Shahar Peer plays Alberta Brianti in that first match (3 PM Eastern) and it's followed by Virginie Razzano vs. Irina Falconi.

Yesterday, the match of the day was Heather Watson vs. Stephanie Dubois. Heather Watson played well in the first set, but Dubois came roaring back and took advantage of Watson's sluggish performance over the next two sets. I was extremely blessed to be able to watch the last two sets of that match with Elena Baltacha's coach, Nino Severino. It was a very informal conversation that ranged from his star student to how some players find it annoying that ball kids aren't trained to be more flexible if a player only wants to receive balls for serving from one side of the court or the other. A lot of players are superstitious and that's just one of the many quirky habits on tour. It must be said that without Twitter, my invite to sit with Coach Nino wouldn't have happened and that's why I think Twitter is such a great service. There are a ton of tennis players tweeting every day and I'm glad there are coaches like Coach Nino that have followed suit and given their followers a different perspective on the sport we all love. Next up for Coach Nino and Elena Baltacha is next week's Mercury Insurance Open in Carlsbad, California.

This Week in Tennis headquarters packed up bright and early this morning to drive the 2.5 hours to College Park, Maryland for the inaugural Citi Open. The WTA tournament is being held at the Tennis Center at College Park and features main draw players from 18 different countries.

When I arrived at the event site I was greeted by friendly staff that pointed me in the direction of the credential trailer. Once inside the trailer I met media contact, Vanessa
French. She made me feel welcome and gave me a quick overview of the ground rules once inside the media tent. I don’t have any special needs when covering tennis events. Basically, if there are plenty of power outlets in the media area I’m happy. Mainly because my Android phone has terrible battery life and I can’t live-tweet matches if my phone is dead!

The tournament is in its second rain delay and it’s given me some time to relay my initial observations about the grounds and stadium court.

– The grounds are a tennis fan’s dream come true. Players walk and run down the same sidewalks that spectators are on; making it feel like your nearby recreational tennis courts.

– I’m slightly confused by stadium court seating. I don’t have a ticket, but I’m told the tickets have seat sections and seat numbers. More than a couple people asked me if I knew how to get to their seats and I tried to help the best I could, but the sections aren’t clearly marked. Another stadium court seating issue is the inclusion of ropes that block walking paths and one too many seats at the end of rows. The extra seats at the end of rows increase seating, but force attendees to walk through rows and interrupt others needlessly. If the one seat at the end of each row was eliminated it would create much better traffic flow.

– There’s a juice bar directly behind stadium court and up against a practice court fence. I don’t think the qualifiers care that the juice blender is loud and maybe the higher ranked players will block out the sound, but I’d be mad if I was serving in a quiet stadium and then all of a sudden the sounds of freshly blended fruit happened in the middle of my service motion.

Citi Open is well on its way to a successful inaugural tournament if the only gripes come from extra seats and fresh fruit. This Week in Tennis will be on-site every day, except for Tuesday and Wednesday and we hope you’ll join us on this site and on Twitter.

In the Skistar Swedish Open at Bastad, Sweden the top four seeds were in action and in the first match Robin Soderling gave up only one game against Tomas Berdych and the second match wasn't much better as David Ferrer only surrendered four games to Nicolas Almagro. In contrast, the MercedesCup in Stuttgart, Germany was seed-less as early as the quarterfinal round and both semifinal matches reached three sets.

In the Nürnberger Gastein Ladies 11 event in Bad Gastein, Austria the only remaining seed, [8] Ksenia Pervak, was double-bageled by Austrian Patricia Mayr-Achleitner. The Austrian was granted a wild card into the tournament and is seeking her first WTA title today against Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

In the blog post, the rising star from Moscow, Russia revealed that she’s fighting Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a form of cancer. Kleybanova hasn’t played on tour since May and instead of enjoying her youth on the tennis court, she’s undergoing treatment in Perugia, Italy and trying to stay positive.

Kleybanova’s news strikes close to home for me, as my father fought Hodgkins back in the 80′s and thankfully survived after many years of worrying and annual check ups. The important thing right now for Alisa is to stay strong by surrounding herself with her family and positive influences. She can fight this just like my Dad did many years ago and will come out of it a much stronger person. One thing is for sure, Alisa Kleybanova has strong support from This Week in Tennis and fans around the world.

On Monday, 1st-seed Julia Goerges and 2nd-seed Jarmila Gajdosova traveled to the side of Stubnerkogel mountain in Bad Gastein, Austria. The two took part of a stunt for Sony Ericsson that saw them rally on a mini-tennis court with barely room to move. The cameras were rolling as the duo hit tennis balls and they had to be blown away by the breathtaking surroundings, but the two players weren't rolling on Tuesday as they both bowed out of the Nürnberger Gastein Ladies 11 event in Bad Gastein, Austria. Defending champion Julia Goerges fell to Laura Pous-Tio 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 and Jarmila Gajdosova lost to Bastad-finalist Johanna Larsson 6-4, 6-2. Goerges and Gajdosova weren't the only upset victims. The only seed that played and won her first round match at Bad Gastein was 8th-seed Ksenia Pervak. If 6th-seed Simona Halep loses on Wednesday the tournament will have lost seven out of eight seeds in the first round and the surviving seed would be the 8th-seed.
