hi tennis fans, this is CoachV. IM watching the Swiss 500 in Basel. Waiting for the Fed vs. Nole Finals to the death. Then it hit me....one of my most important tennis tips. What Comes First the Swing or the footwork?
For the last ten years I have been teaching Swing first. then foot work to get to your hit. NOw for the pass years where I work for others and not in-charge of the programs those pros that had title or seniority over me attack me with vigor. The came from the old system of footwork first. They hated the idea of showing the student the swing without going through the turn & step &/or Loop Swing. Yet I have not meet many teaching pros that can beat me on court either.
there is very little difference between the two ways, but What matters is the how the student learns Best.
so who is correct here. the chicken or the egg = what comes first, the swing or footwork?

Well, the new way is to use the unit turn. The unit turn does start the shoulder turn, without the swing, then the player is free to run without their arms dangling. They can pivot down on either leg, depending on closed, neutral, open stance. Then they start the swing.
Then there's the other new one, where the player pumps both arms for a nearly out of reach ball, just like a 100 meter sprinter out of the blocks. Then they get either into a unit turn, or do the forehand squash slice shot (Fed), or bend at the waist and sprawl facing forward (Djokovic).
But I like swing first too. Connors and Mac used that one to death. Early swing prep on Connors return. Early swing prep on Mac volleys. :)
Unit Turn Is like the New Buzz Word Explain it in simple terms. LIke twisting. or spinning yourself in a circle motion.
All the unit turn is turn your shoulders with your hands at the top of the takeback. So twist your shoulders closed, and have your hands at the throat of the racquet higher than the shoulders. Then you are free to run and go into whatever stance you decide: open, closed, or neutral.
Classic unit turn is Turn and Step. But players must understand that " UNIT TURN" Is the Prep Phase to hit. ITs not a separate thing, its all one thing.
