My story on Cheating by CoachV - William Vazquez

I am 18 years old when this happened. I'm now 32

I was playing a level one junior match against my friend who I trained with for four year. the match was extremely close since we both known each others habits and shot inside and out. He was left handed serve and volley-er, I was a base liner shot maker right handed. I new where his volley's were weakest at and he knows where I have no shots.

The first set he won at 6-4 I one the second set 7-5 he is up in the third set 6-5. the score is 15-30 he is up on my serve. we get into a rally where I was able to take advantage of a short ball. I was very close to the net within the service box with a medium bounce ball high enough to make a aggressive forehand. I hit the shot, I see that it hits the line. Not only did it hit the line but my friend swung at the ball it went under his racquet and missed the shot entirely. That makes it 30-30. WRONG

MY friend called it out and I started a fuss. I said "HEY, that was in! how are you going to do me in like that I saw it in I was close enough". he said "the ball was out my call." and he was right.

I am now down double match point. when it should be 30-30 or Deuce. I was pissed this was too hard and unfair for me to come back from. So I started the cowards way and cheated back to make the score Deuce.

BUT, this is how it went down.

a crazy friend of mine who was a greatest tennis player aka.(king) of Pelham Bay Park ( until his retirement of the title. Which then became my title .) in the Bronx NY, but off his rocker, told me once that if a cheater cheats you..... you cheat twice back and the cheater will never win. He called it tennis's golden rule. Funny, but not my way.

I decided to put into effect the Evil golden rule just to tie up the score where it should have been, because I felt in a immature manor that I have been wronged. ( I no longer cheat at all.)

we got into a baseline rally where I was most dominant. He hit a shot right on the line I called it out. No contest because of his distance from the baseline he really couldn't see it or he didn't care. the score is now 30-40 Match point, Third set we have been out there for three hours.

we get into a Mid court rally where my slice Backhand cross court VS his Whip like cross court Lefty Forehand. The Ball was going cross court for about a rally of 10 hits to 15 hits. We are both waiting for an imperfect shot from one another to attack down the line for the point. If i hit a Slice cross court that bounces too high he will hit a down the line winner for the Match. If he hits a Shot that doesn't Kick up to my backhand I will drive it Down the line to tie up the score.

around shot 11 or 12 his ball hits the Singles line and I decide this was my take back. I call the ball out (i am a jerk and IM sorry for doing so). I catch the ball after the bounce and turn my back.
I hear him scream at me, What?????!!!!! I chuckled.... I guess I was releasing the stress, or most likely I didn't have the maturity for playing. I wasn't happy for cheating. I turned around to face him and said in a stone cold face that was just out, sorry my call. Deuce.

This time because he knew that I cheated him Straight up and no mistake. It stressed him out to the point of no return. He completely lost his focus and succumbed to the anger.

He left the court to get a referee. after five minutes He returns with The referee. The referee ask what the score was and we both agreed to 4-6, 7-5, 5-6 Deuce.

We get into another Base line rally, about shot 4 He smashes the Ball out way out like he was trying to hit me from the other base line. My ad. I serve and Hit smashes the Ball again out. 6-6 Tie breaker.

I was unhappy that he lost his temper, I just wanted to tie up the score where it should have been. I didn't want to throw off his tennis game. I was thinking this during the change over. I also believe that he would calm down during the break and that with the referee there we can both concentrate on playing our best for this three hour match.

I was Wrong.

In the tie breaker he was very still mad at me. and he hit every ball out. I won the tie breaker 7-0 to go into the finals. He was shaking in anger when he shook my hand. I tried to talk to him but, he just said shut up and he left in anger.

To this day we are still good friends and we talk when we see each other and we still play each other. 2 years after the tournament was The last time we played against each other and he beat my ass. 6-2 Which is our usual scores against each other.

He finished college and got PHD in history. I of course became a tennis professional. The End.

Cheating is a tactic players use when they are scared and cowardly. As a Tournament director I have seen how cheating ruins The Sport of tennis.

I was Watching the Finals of a Girls 12 about three years ago.

I was Watching the Finals of a Girls 12 about three years ago. I was asked to watch the match because of cheating. player #1 is the cheater, player #2 is not. Player #1 asked me to watch the match. I explain the rules in which I am effective. I do not make any calls, I only over rule calls to the best of my ability when a Player challenges a call.

Player #2 was cheated about 4 games worth of points during my watch over the match and still won. I though that this was the greatest Match I ever saw. Because of players #2 non-Ego and Focus she was able to out play the Cheater to win the Finals. Not once did player #2 ask if the ball was in or out and trusted every call player #1 made. Something I wish I had when I was that age.

The Cheater player #1 however did not learn anything from her loss because of her ego and would not be able to make improvements. I believe that since she was cheating from the start that the pressure was too much for her. Lack of focus and Lack of understanding. Two major components of learning. If you are focus and don't understand you should have questions and not excuses. Player#1 ask me if Player#2 Calls were right about 1 games worth of points. This also showed lack of confidence and Focus. If your thinking about calls you make bad you might think that the person is hurting and they want to hurt you back. hurting someone may leave a negative feeling on you and cause an emotional problem which will effect your confidence. The focus is obvious you thinking about something other that playing the ball.
I like the story chief, keep em coming!!

A very good story to bring to light. I wonder how many tournament games are ruined by cheating. When a few points can swing a match around, the temptation is definitely there. But no one wins a tournament that way. At least, I should hope not.
the pros do it all the time in the satellites, future's and challengers. but its much worse. I was playing for nothing boys 18 regional semi finals. pros play to live.

I've heard some really bad stories and backtalk. It really ruins USTA tennis.

its not the USTA. its your every day coach and player.
Hmm, that makes me think. Or, at least, I might have to alter what I think of the whole thing then.
Please re read this Tim.
