Grunting isnt necessary at all, its more like a habit, st that throughout time has become ordinary to the player. It isnt mandatory though :) but n1 should do it on purpose, just to distract the opponent.

I was at Wimbledon when they made Monica stop grunting. It definitely effects the game. Actually, you nailed it on the head. It shouldn't be allowed.

Thought I would throw this out there. In Martial Arts, they teach yelling or shouting during a punch/kick as a way to focus and force you to breathe. It's also a way to intimidate. As a player I don't mind the grunting, but as a fan it does get annoying sometimes.

I don't feel the grunt should be banned completely. I do feel that some of the players out there take it a little to far though. I am not a regular grunter but if I am trying to put every last bit of energy into a shot a grunt has come out a time or two. Definitely not a regular thing it can get annoying when it one puts more effort into the grunt than the shot.

I think grunting just takes away from the element of class that this sport should have. I am afraid that pros like Nadal and Sherapova pose an extremely bad example for impressionable youngsters watching them on TV. I sincerely feel that this is something that will stay in this sport for good...which is extremely unfortunate. It just seems no one has teh balls to do anything about this. Besides the technicality of an opponent not hearing the sound of the ball hitting the strings, its just crass…

Skeet, I think we should petition the ATP and WTA. ;-) I like the second component to the "regulation" you added. The duration is key. If they are doing it so late, it just becomes an irritation.

LOL enough said there. good ol' hormones. she's strong no doubt about it.

Have you noticed Nadal grunting? Like ShaRAPova, he does this drawn out sigh/grunt/wail thing that lasts up until his opponent actually hits the ball. Blake will give a grunt at times when he rips a forehand, but it's just right before he hits the ball and that's it.

Mark, like the decibel idea. the chair ump can tell the fans to put a lid on it, so why not a wailer/grunter? you could also measure the duration, like say…

This is sort of off topic and I'm not a hater,
but this evening while Serena was playing (and I was fixin me a sandwich), I thought mens tennis was on. From far off, her grunts sound like a mans'.
Again, I'm not a hater, I was just shocked at myself for thinking it was a man...
Yeah... but how would the umpire know if you did it on purpose or not?
I think they should set a loudness limit and get the decibel reader out there if they suspect it's getting to loud. :-)
